Help Needed. Electrical Faults!

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by marge1963, Jun 11, 2023.

  1. So, I am on day two of an 8 day tour on my 1098. Heading for Ireland.
I have an intermittent electrical fault. The instrument cluster back light, and the main lights die. It goes to parking lights only. Indicators, neutral light and main beam, std beam do not work. Engine runs fine. If I pull over and stop the engine, on the kill button, instantly the dash and lights comes back on. I set off again and between 5mins and 20mins the same issue occurs.
So, any thoughts? Anyone had these issues? Thanks in advance for your help. IMG_2857.jpeg
I think I will be okay riding it as it will be daytime riding on tour, but it needs to be fixed.

  2. Test response.

  3. Have you ridden through any heavy rain?
This happened to my 1198 in France when ridden in monsoon conditions on the Autoroute down to Lyon.
Fortunately the rain stopped and the sun came out after the tunnels through Lyon. Had to stop for an hour and leave the bike in the sun to dry off a little. After that it was OK for the rest of the trip.

  4. I had similar symptoms a few summer's ago, also on 1098(R) and turned out to be first signs of regulator overheating/failing. Mine happened a few times while riding, randomly but then progressed to erratic dashboard even with engine off. Could equally be any connector intermittently mis-behaving of course, plus several other options.

  5. I agree with Chris. A 1098 R I worked with had these symptoms but it also showed Batt HI in the dash. It was the voltage regulator failing with a high battery voltage (>16V).

  6. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I had ridden through some rain, but it’s been dry today. Good thought about the rectifier. I had dismissed this the engine runs fine.

  7. I will take a look at the battery voltage.

  8. You should be seeing around 14.2V at the battery, certainly not as much as 15V.

  9. Where are you, assuming not Fishguard en route to Ireland

  10. Echoing @Chris - ditto had reg/rec failure on 1098 but symptoms slightly different and faster failure. Dash went wonky followed fairly rapidly by erratic running and then conked out.

  11. So, here is the update. I am now in Dublin, in a hotel waiting for Rosso Ducati to open. I had to get recovered from the motorway as the bike died. While waiting, based on good advice from the group, I decided to take the fairing off to look at the Reg/ rectifier. The battery stank and was red hot to touch, 30mins after the bike had conked out and nothing happened when I turned the ignition.
I am assuming that I will need a new reg/ rectifier & a new battery. Does the stator on these have any known issues? Am I likely to need a new stator?

  14. I'm on Fishguard if you ever pass this way en route to / from Ireland

  15. Oh dear - hope it won’t be too much hassle for you to get fixed.
On a positive note - at least you know what the problem is.

  16. Try Robbie at Mototechnic
014908947, if you’re using a UK mobile you will probably have to drop the 0 and replace it with +353
    His business address is:
Unit 52, KCR Industrisl Estate, Kimmage, Dublin
    Moto Technic

I believe he’s open today, most other dealers will be closed today.

Your main problem here will be finding someone who has a replacement Reg/rec available. There are just 2 Ducati dealers here on the island, Rosso in Dublin and Millsport in Ballymoney, NI, neither carry a great parts stock :(.

Mototechnic is an independent service centre, he used to work at Rosso, but he does work on his own. Your best bet is to get a lift (taxi or pillion) to his place and have a chat with him face to face, he can be a bit short on the phone.

  20. Wow. That’s really good of you, but I couldn’t ask you to do that. If needed I will have to wait on the Ducati dealership to order me the parts.
