good day folks. Right about a month ago I posted about my 848 sounding like it has a dry clutch. However my bike has a wet clutch and wanted to see if their was any signs to see if it had be converted, short story its still a wet clutch.. so what was the noise? had some comments about exhaust leak etc. checked bike over a day or two later all is well. strange I went out last night for a blast ( getting the bike nice and hot ) and boom, noise is back. but this time its 10x worse, to compare it to anything it sound like when a clutch on a drill lets go and you get that shriek. seems to be when on the bike at certain speeds (faster) it goes and more pronounced shifting down and going about 30mph. ( would like to add gears changing is fine ,no crunching or anything, actually quite smooth) was doing it on tick over slightly but more when you rev it. I pulled clutch in and out, but noise does not come or go. (cant be clutch fault). noise seems to be coming from the alternator side, if you put your hand on the casing you can feel the rattle. ( I did later open the little cap to check this bearing and all seems ok) anyway I was miles from home so just plodded on. going at a normal pace, not reving it to much (say under 6k). I stopped up the road about 20 miles later.. noise had gone, all seems well, so decided to test it again and gave it the beans for another 10 miles ish ( naughty i know but was in the name of science ). got home and nothing no noise or anything. other than the noise the bike performed well. not crunching of gears, no miss shifting, faultless. sorry about the essay, just trying to get the whole picture across. many thanks people
Has the alternator cover been off for any reason ? There is a small bearing just behind the removable access cover to fit a puller for removal. If the correct tool is not used to align it properly then that bearing is easily damaged and falls apart. There is a you tube video somewhere of a guy showing the removal of the cover and the bearing balls falling out into his hand and it made quite a racket. I'll see if I can find the vid and link it here.
On earlier engines, the alternator nut is a known weak point. It comes loose and allows the flywheel to float about. Later engines are supposed to be much less prone but maybe this could be the problem.
Thumbs up. Well just put oil in. Filter etc etc. Started it. Not a problem. I have a video which I shall post later. But going for a ride to see if I can replicate this noise
Gosh, imho, replicating the noise equals replicating the damage. With all that debris, I'd be wanting to know where it came from before riding it again... :/
Could be the crankshaft sludge trap plug unscewing itself (common prob on Desmoquatro engines) or possibly the main bearings starting to go? This may account for the swarf and the fact that the noise has temporarily gone, due to the surface of the plug wearing away. Was the noise directly related to engine speed or did it seem to occur at half engine speed? That may help you decide if it's cam or crankshaft related. In all honesty it's unlikely to fix itself for long and you'd better prepare for at least a partial strip to find the cause before it wrecks more havoc.
Don't want to be one to give bad news! Mine did this but had vibes through pegs and bike generally. The big filter you've got had bits of gold colour in it. I needed a new crank and engine rebuild. The screech you mentioned I've heard before belts were changed, like they were too tight and when hot screeched. How does it run? Where you based?
In Ashford Kent. It did it more when coming down the gears. Say approx 30mph seemed more prominent. I've spoken to dealer just now. And as bike under 3 months old from them. They are collecting it. However I haven't told them about the oil change I've just done in case this voids the said warranty. Plus if they cannot replicate the noise they will just send it back. Shall I be honest and forward the pictures or hold out until they say. We cannot find a fault. They have already done that once
Let them inve Let them investigate but tell them as much about the noise as possible. I'd put it back together so it's running and go from there.
I'm definitely in catch 22 if I tell them about the filings them I'm screwed. But currently I have no fault. I did send them a video of the noise so hopefully go by that. But I want to be honest
