I'm looking for some original ( coloured ) wheels for a 1995 Superlight. Do all wheels from this era fit ie 888, 900 Monster, ST2, SS's upto what year, I'm thinking up to 1999 year. I heard the earlier SS models ie 1992, 93 had different front spindle size. Thanks for your help.
I can only tell you that there are two different wheel types for the carbed SSs...................The spindle can be changed from the early 17mm to the larger one, no problem if you change the bearings and the spacer (watch the spacer length because it seems that some vary)......... .............however, the above applies OK if you want to go racing, because you don't need the speedo............... ........but if you need the speedo you will find the wheel hub recess and the speedo drive are different and not intechangeable. The way to tell which is the earlier (smaller speedo drive) wheel, is to look at the brake disc retaining lip.......it is about 6mm wide, whereas the later wheel has a lip of about 4mm............I never measured them, just looked at them. Brake discs are interchangeable. I think the wheels changed in about 94 - 95...........and you can identify the date of manufacture by the figures in the 'oval' marking on one of the spokes. If you have the speedo drive, I can identify which wheel you will need if you post pics of it and the drive washer thingy that would be in the hub. AL.
Thats very helpful, there's a lot of second hand wheels on ebay and wanted to make sure I got the correct fitting, they all look the same from that era.
The carb SS ones look the same, but they ain't as I described above.........your speedo drive hole for the axle will also tell you if it is early or late wheel. If you start changing axle diameters, you also have to change the insert at the bottom of the left fork leg. ....however, when it comes to monster and IE SS wheels, if they have a 'rib' running along each spoke, they won't fit...................or not without a lot of sodding about. AL
The spokes on early and late three spoke Brembo wheels are different, early wheels have the spoke wide at the rim, tapering in towards the hub, and later ones are wider at the hub than at the rim.
The later ones are the ones with the rib, but as I said earlier, there are two Brembo wheels for the carbed SS.........they look identical, but they ain't. AL
