Thought it was time to say Hello, I've owned an St2 for fifteen years, been off road for a year or two having suffered the usual charging and starter clutch issues. When I finally got around to changing the clutch bearing I found some suspicious metal fragments in the sump, so need to strip and rebuild the engine. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for mods while I'm in there?
Forgot i'd posted this, so here's an update. the metal fragments were part of the shim behind the alternator rotor, it had moved when reassembling and the edge was chewed by an adjoining cog. I had walked away in disgust and left the bike for best part of a year. A new shim and a quick clean-out and the bike is back together. Once I had sorted the regulator and cables I was back on the road.
Another ST rescued, Brilliant! I get the niggles, I've got three of the bloody things but in all honesty I love riding them as they're like nothing else. Uprated cables and a decent battery are a must on early an ST2. My early ST2 is a single phase bike and the battery comes off through the winter, all connectors are annually ACF'd, the oil is changed regular too, just to keep that genny cool. We are hopefully having an ST meet later on in the year. If you're on Facebook we have an ST UK page there. https://www.facebook.com/groups/834643140048807/
Plus one on the need for a really good battery and a cable kit for virtually any Ducati if you want decent starting and to preserve your sprag clutch. The older the bike, the greater the need.
You picked a calm day for the photo, most of the time it was blowing a gale or raining, still had a great time though. Steve
That "little man" is my Pal Bob, a guy who used to enter enduros when we where younger on an XT500 and beat all the guys on big open class strokers, a guy who rides either a KTM 950 Adventure or TRX850 engined Super Tenere and goes faster than most sports bike owners to the point where there's scrape marks on his bashplate. Size isn't everything! (Still he is a short arse at 5'4").....
