Hi Everyone

  1. Hi guys,

    Just joined here, be gentle!

Hoping to use this to improve my knowledge (try share any if I can), learn some technical tips and tricks and generally have a news with people.

On that note, I have a 916 SP, I don't ride it as an everyday bike and I was looking for something which may fit that bill. I had a Triumph Street or Speed Triple in mind (wrong forum I know) but also very keen on a Scrambler or Hypermotard. Anyone owners on here want to throw in their 2 cents?

    Cheers!

  2. always room for another Scot - welcome and enjoy those great roads you have up there ! :upyeah:

  4. It's Stephen, Steve will do though! :tearsofjoy:

I did fall in love with a Scrambler Full Throttle when I saw one at the Ducati dealership in Glasgow. The Hypermotard SP looks like a hoot as well though.

  5. Aye, whatever Dave :)

  7. Welcome Steve. I'm pretty new here myself.

I'm strictly a fair weather biker, so saying my everyday bike is a street triple is a bit of a stretch. However, i do have one along side a ducati 998s. I have to admit i find it very difficult to walk past the ducati and get on the Triumph since getting the 998.
As I'm sure you know the triple is a great bike, decent power and great fun without being intimidating but compared to the ducati it just isn't the same kind of event to ride - maybe exactly what you want?
If you want a commuting bike I'm sure there are better options, but I still really enjoy and like my street triple and really don't want to pay with it, even if I don't think it's going to get used as much as it should.

  9. I live on the outskirts of the city, something good in town (the 916 doesn't like filtering through town) and something with a bit of grunt for the country roads as well. The Scrambler looks awesome, but the Hypermotard 1100 SP looks like loads of fun, but I imagine it wouldn't be great on a long run? Could be wrong.

    Fit like min! :sunglasses:

  10. on the right day i could be persuaded to swap my 848 for a hyper. long journey's? no prob.

  11. I wouldnt buy any ducati for big miles unless you have either deep pockets or a penchant for getting bent over by dealers.

D675, speed triple (or a street) would be my first choice. Half the servicing costs for starters.

  12. Worth pointing out that the servicing on the triple can be expensive too (if you stick with main dealers), I just had to pay £500 for a 12k service as a valve check is needed

  13. its twice that on a duc though (for the valve clearance service) and a basic service on a triumph is only around 90 quid instead of 250

  14. could be the start of a good debate here. the fugly has cost me jack over the 6years and 19k hard mls on it, low maintenance (lazy) think the shims are about 5or 6k over due. might give it belts at the end of the season. the 848 £350 over the three years and 6k on it. not servicing it this year and it wont be getting the shims until 15k at the earliest. maybe i is just lucky but apart from a bit of a head scratcher right back at the beginning but both have been uber reliable with zero pampering.

  15. Maintenance is one of those things you can get away with not doing sometimes, as its just the manufacturers covering their butts or ensuring customers keep spending the cash. On the other-hand, if some things are skipped then the results can be very expensive.

After the valve service on the Triumph for example, the mechanic kindly mentioned that in all his years of servicing triples he's never once had to adjust the valves after 12k miles. This obviously left me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside knowing I just spent a pile of cash on something that didn't really need doing.

  16. I’ll have racked up 15k on the 899 by the time my years ownership comes round.

    General cost;

Two sets of tyres @ £280 odd fitted
    One ACF treatment @ £90
    Two services -
    1x £250 (+£100 to add a decal)
    1x£950 (15k service)

    On my 675s

Two sets of tyres @£250 odd fitted
    Two services
    1 x £90 (6k)
    1 x £400 (12k)

Insurance and petrol consumption also dearer on the 899 (unsurprisingly etc).

Quite a big difference over the course of a year.

  19. I had a full service on my 916 at Ducati Glasgow, cost me £585 which I thought was reasonable. Prior to that it was maintained by my Dad. Everything was well documented.

Any maintenance I need gets done by a local Ducati enthusiast who says "I take 3 times as long to do the work but I do a better job and I'm less than half the price!"

I don't care about the dealer stamp really, it is only for resale value. I know the bike has been maintained well and I am not going to sell it so no point forking out the money. I hope to improve my mechanical abilities and aim to start servicing myself.
