Hi, I bought a nice yellow 749 about two years ago, yes it had some issues but I wanted a project, shortly after it wouldn't start, I diagnosed a faulty fuel pump relay, so out with e battery, and battery box and relay changed and there it has stayed for the last 16 months, while i have converted my T5 into a camper. SO now I am trying to work out how ti put it all back together, it looks like the heat shield screws onto the back of the battery box? It still needs a lot of work, oxidising radiator, leaking hoses etc, but I want to get it running first and then tackle one job at a time. This is my second Ducati, my first was an 848 which i absolutely loved but had to sell to buy a house.
Welcome, yes the heat shield has 4 tint self tappers that screw to the back of the battery box - the heads go through the shield if you are not careful, which is why I supply 4 washers with my cable kits one of the washers is bent due to the location and profile of the shield.
Although these instructions are for my lovely cable kits www.exact-start.com (forum subscriber discount available) they will help you get the battery box re connected even if you decide not to fit one The last picture shows the box assembly from behind...
Take the hint and order a cable kit while you have the battery box apart. It will transform your bikes starting, especially if you team it it up with a fresh Yuasa AGM battery and will prolong the life of your sprag clutch as well, so will save you money long term. A cable kit was the best money I’ve spent on my 999.
Welcome to the forum. Most of your Ducati related issues can be resolved wit the help of the knowledgeable people on here (Exige being a case in point - not bad for a Yorkshire lad ;-) ) Enjoy getting the 749 back up and running.
Thanks, it was a cheap house to buy, as it had been empty for over 20 years, and all the lead of the roof had been nicked. although we did have to find some cash apart from the proceeds of the sale. Looking around it seems Samco seem to be the hoses of choice, are there any other makes worth looking at ?
I got cheap ebay things. they do the job, but need a bit of tinkering to make sure they don't kink due to less than perfect sizing. I think I will go back to the black ones when I can be arsed.
Cannot agree enough. The kit is a masterclass in being a product that genuinely makes your bike better while including everything you need (even down to emery paper and dialectic grease) and proper instructions that don't make you bite off your own tongue in rage.
Yeah, in my old age I've come to realise that often the manufacturer OE parts are the best for the job too.
Yellow = correct. I'd personally start with the usual fluids (inc brake fluid - there's a bleed valve inside the reservoir - and fork oil) / filters / plugs / belts and clearances if due (I always pay Italia for my servicing because I'm busy and lazy - check whether the alternator needs nut tightness confirming on a Testastretta, it does on a Desmoquattro). Get some fresh tyres on it and reset all the suspension settings back to their base. New radiator, OE hoses with new clips and clamps where needed and go through the bike for a deep clean and replace any damaged / corroded or aftermarket fasteners. Pull all the relays while you're in there and along with fuses and all connectors give them a clean and a wipe with dialectic grease. Get an exact-fit cable kit on there and if it's a biposto then consider spending a bit and going mono as they look lovely. DucatiDiag leads from eBay and learn how to reset your TPS, and if you want to go deep then replace coils on both cylinders proactively when you do the plugs. Then ride and enjoy!
