We often hear very quickly about the problems the MTS 1200 has (porus heads, coolant leaks, oil leaks, moisture in oil etc etc) but what about some positive stories? Surely there must be plenty of MTS 1200 owners that have done 1000s of km / miles with no problems (apart from normal servicing)? Lets hear some of these postive accounts!
Nearly at 22,000 miles and have had 6 big problems (all put on this forum). Will look with interest if anyone on this thread has had a clear run. Somehow I doubt it.
IMO 22,000 is NOT a high mileage Mine is just over 22,500 and has just had both heads replaced due to a porosity through to the exhaust port in the horizontal one. But was dealt with quickly and efficiently by Ducati Glasgow at no expense to me. So I'm happy. In April there was a problem in the loom pigtail to the front ABS sensor connector. It had been cable tied too tightly, causing it to get stretched at full lock and eventually leading to a wire breaking at the connector. I dealt with this myself easily enough. No other problems while the previous owner had it either.
I'm looking at buying a Multistrada myself. Being honest please, who'd recommend it? I'm not exactly feeling the love of other owners towards their steeds!
Ian, they are fantastic bikes. Buy one, get a warranty, make sure all the recalls are done (check the colour of the coolant) and you should be good to go.
End of October I just clocked up 30k km. No problems sice I had the bike from new! All services etc done per schedule. Great bike
Question is which Multi are you talking about? I had a 2010 MTS and did 32,000 miles on it, lots of recalls and work BUT it never let me down, it always got me home. Current 2013 MTS has done 12,000 miles (20km) in 10 months and apart from the rear sensor update and normal servicing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has gone wrong with it. Best bike out there at the moment - IMO.
Bought mine last May with 11000 miles, decided to pay a premium and buy from a dealer due to the problems documented on this site, Bloody glad I did as over the last 6 months.. 2 New heads (£3500 repair had it not been covered) New clocks, and a leak from the water pump, all covered by the dealer, awesome bike though!
Something that should be made clear. Only a small amount of the 2010 bikes were affected with porous cylinder heads and Ducati have been replacing the heads on all as they occurr FOC. If a dealer is asking for payment to replace the heads something is wrong as Ducati are fully covering the costs of the head replacements.
Veetwin I echo your words. Hasn't let me down either. No idea what I'd swap it with if I chose to. Like a Swiss Army knife/bike for me (in red obviously). Other Mutley tools are available
Shouldn't matter if it is 2010 or later, it's the same manufacturing fault which Ducati have acknowledged and Ducati should cover whether it is still within warranty or not.
2010 with nearly 50,000km. Failed rear shock servo adjuster. instrument cluster has a faint neutral indication if another lamp is on (like low fuel), not really an issue for me. still the best bike I've ever ridden and thats coming from a bike slut.
Fantastic bike with a warranty, out of warranty is scary, I sold mine when the warranty was near its end. I also think that second hand values will rapidly decrease as when you can be faced with a bill for thousands its a bit like russian roulette, but I would have to say it is probably the best bike I have ever owned. I was relieved when I sold it though!
Minor warranty work needed on my early 2013 S. I do about 1,000 miles a month on average. Absolutely love the bike. Best I've ever owned and the list includes big Hondas, Triumphs, Yamahas and Laverdas. If I were looking to change I honestly don't know what I'd buy. So I will maybe just wait for the new model - or buy an extended warranty.
As i would hope to keep it until the warranty was finished anyhow though it's a bit of a worry when ownership is described as 'Russian Roulette'.... Weather permitting I'm going to try one today or tomorrow, to see if i can used to the more upright riding position.
