High Spot On Tyre.

Discussion in 'Tyres' started by Gimlet, Aug 12, 2015.

  1. Had a new set of M7RRs fitted the other day and the fitter noticed that the centre of the tyre was catching on the back on the swinging arm but only in one particular spot. The chain was a little slack and adjusting that pulled the wheel back enough to stop the rubbing. The wheel was balanced and the wheel itself appeared to be perfectly true and the bead was evenly seated so there must be a high spot on the tyre. I can't see how that can be scrubbed off so presumably I'm going to have an egg shaped tyre right up to the end of its life which isn't good to know.
Anyone else had this? It was a Oponeo tyre so the cheapest price I could find. Surely that can't have a bearing can it?

Also had a pair of Dunlop Roadsmart IIs fitted to my KTM. Never tried Dunlops before but they are fabulous of that bike. Chicken strips gone and the bike rolls from one side to the other through the bends like a barrel in water. They feel absolutely lovely. Grip is superb, steering weightless. Its a different bike.
They say the Roadsmart II is as grippy as the old Sportsmart I but longer lasting and better in the wet. In that basis I'm half tempted to give Sportsmart IIs a try on the Streetfighter next time. Anyone else tried them on the big SF or the 1098/1198 SBK etc?

  2. IMO you should never been allowed to leave with that M7RR fitted, end of. The occasional tyre makes it through the quality check with defects, given the volume it's to be expected but the onous is on the fitter to prevent that tyre getting onto the rosd. Had it with car tyres but never a motorcycle tyre. Andy

  3. I've had it with ÂŁ150 van tyres....one bad one...egg shaped...from a very well known brand...replaced without question....tyre fitter spotted the issue.

  4. I rang Oponeo this morning and explained the problem with my tyre.
This was their response. Is this legal?

    Dear Sir,
Thank you for your call today.
To investigate your case, can we kindly ask you to send us the pictures of the tyre as an evidence.
In addition, could you please describe the situation.

Please be informed that the warranty period is from the date of purchase if goods are replaced within the warranty period, the warranty will continue from the original date of purchase.
The processing time of your complaint by the tyre manufacturer may last up to 3 months.

In this case we need a filled in and signed complaint form sent to [email protected] in order to raise an official complaint. Be warned that any applications missing any file will not be taken into consideration.

After receiving a signed complaint form, Oponeo.co.uk organizes a collection of the faulty goods, which are sent straight to the manufacturer for a complaint examination.

When your complaint will be grounded, Oponeo.co.uk will swap defective goods with new ones. If that is not possible (no availability), Oponeo.co.uk will return the funds that the customer initially paid or will offer a different product which is currently available in stock.

If the complaint is not recognized the customer will cover all service costs resulting from the complaint (transport costs to and from, handling costs of the manufacturer or dealer). The customer also agrees to cover all the costs within 14 days from the date of issue of the manufacturer’sresponse. The lack of payment will lead to judicial proceedings against the customer.

You will be informed about the Complaint Result by our Customer Service Department via e-mail.

Surely under the 1983 sale of goods act if you are dissatisfied with an item you are entitled to a refund?
    Trading standards have been consulted.

  5. Just spoken to Trading Standards. It isn't legal. They have failed to provide pre-contractual information in a durable form (in other words they didn't put all this in writing at the time of making the purchase) therefore the contract is unenforceable. Its like for like replacement or complete refund within 14 days.
Letter going off by recorded delivery today.
Will let you know have this turns out.

  7. Been looking into it further. They do publish terms and conditions on their website. Trading Standards say they are required to notify you of these before they take the money. They do, but only after the sale has gone through because, like all websites, its the sale which generates the email notifications so I don't think that is going to stand up.
More to the point, another independent fitter has had a look at it and he says the distortion is tiny and in his opinion is down to a storing issue and it is unlikely that any manufacturing defect will be found with the tyre. He reckons that with several heat cycles it will probably disappear and was only noticeable in the first place because it was fitted to a fat single-sided swinging arm with little tyre clearance and it probably happens far more often than people realise without mishap.
From the way they've nailed down their returns policy I suspect this is pretty common.

I could pursue it but I think I will end up with no tyre for three months and then get the same one back again with a bill for costs and carriage which will probably be as much as the tyre was worth in the first place.

Yes you're right Bradders, that is the risk of buying sight-unseen from the internet. But I guess that's true of buying anything online. On the other hand the other three tyres are perfect so I guess I'm going to have to put it down to experience.
