Need a hire car for Almeria in march, has anyone used Alboran auto’s? They are a local business. Looking at trustpilot, Hertz, europcar and gold car have very mixed reviews. Cheers
I always used doyouspain for car rental (I had a holiday home in Spain for 10 years) very competitive on price but make sure you either take out the extra insurance or get a standalone car rental excess insurance cover policy for the inevitable car park damage /scratches etc, also prudent to thoroughly examine the car for dent & scratches before you drive it away, I also used to take a little bottle of t-cut & some small squares of 240/400/800/1200 wet & dry, got me out of jail more than once, just my 2p worth.
Not used Alboran however I used Hertz earlier this month in Spain, all pre booked, paperwork and payment. I was 20 minutes just doing the paperwork at the desk, as were the people in front of me. I'd booked a focus and got a "similar" car in the same group. Problem was the boot was smaller so just managed to get the cases in. Car itself gave no problems.
We always use Centauro. Get the full insurance ,never had a problem. Mate of mine used gold car and the charged him £400 for a parcel shelf that was never in the car
The big car hire firms are like vultures and you have to be really alert to avoid their nasty practices. 1. We have upgraded you Sir = We rented your car to someone else, now you are paying double what you agreed for an upgrade you don't need. 2. If you don't take our ridiculously expensive insurance we will make sure we find some damage and charge you a fortune to repair it. 3. You didn't fill the tank up so we charged you E50 for a litre of fuel. 4. Here is the motorway pre-pay fee, no way you will ever spend it. 5. Sat nav? What, you don't know where you are going? 6. You ordered a petrol so you can put your unused track day fuel in the hire car? Ha ha, you now have a diesel. 7. A month later your credit card is dinged for E400 for "damage". Do not leave the hire car at the airport until it is signed off. 8. Ask for the name of the person signing off and make it really awkward by taking a photo of them with your docs. Good luck.
We used Enterprise at Almeria. No hassle. Sat Nav? All 3 of us have iphones. We used google maps. So we had a basic car and it was fine.
Make sure you take out the full insurance and damage waiver. It’s good practice to then return the car back to them on its roof
Don't fall for “we do not count the small marks on the bodywork” patter. It is a lie. Record everything. I take photos when collecting any rental these days, and make sure they see me taking the photos too. Apart from that, do a thorough road test, top speed, 0-60 from a standing start etc.
I’ve used Europcar at Almeria airport for a number of years an have a ‘Preferred Customer” account. The only issue I’ve had was a €50 admin fee for suspicious parking fine on our first trip to Cartagena. I used to organise a third party damage insurance in the UK which was always accepted without question but on a pre covid trip, I was offered a heavily discounted insurance package by the company so took that. My, what a difference in attitude at handback time. “I see you have our comprehensive insurance Mr Collins, just pop the keys on the desk and have a safe journey home”. Since then, I’ve always managed to get a good discount on the full insurance package and I have to say the peace of mind it gives is worth the £50 extra it costs over the third party insurance. I will say, the last immediate post covid trip, the basic cost of the hire car went through the roof but pretty sure it’s come down now. Andy
Thanks everyone for your input, we will have a beer and book seems to be luck involved to some degree but ah oh
