My wife got home today and noticed a security post on our driveway was leaning slightly so I had a look on the cctv and sure enough a car comes in and try’s to turn around hitting my post, they got out and inspected the damage and then just fucked off. I have the clear footage and the registration number but how do I get their address so that they can pay for the damage?
As @Carr01 says, that’s all you can do. dVLA won’t give you the details unless you’re an ‘official’ company (eg a car park owner using pay & display). As it was an accident and there’s damage to a 3rd party’s property by rights, under one or other of the various Road Traffic Acts the culprit should have reported it. The local police station should be able to help you.
Unfortunately like most places now we don’t have a local police station anymore. It’s so annoying I was in when it happened but in the workshop, bloody old duffers in a new mini that should know better. I’ll have to call 101 I suppose and see if I can email the footage to them.
How to report Non-emergency Online (if available with the local force in charge) Search by location to find out which force's jurisdiction it falls into. By Phone - 101 Report online or call 101 if you want to report a minor crime or incident, such as: a stolen item property damage a civil dispute if you suspect drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood to share information about possible criminal activity in your area antisocial behaviour non-urgent enquiries https://www.police.uk/pu/contact-us/what-and-how-to-report/how-to-report/
You can and should request information from DVLA, see: https://www.gov.uk/request-information-from-dvla 'You can ask for details of another vehicle’s registered keeper. You’ll need a ‘reasonable cause’, for example: finding out who was responsible for an accident' There are different forms for individuals with a cause such as you in this instance, and for parking companies. Your form is V888 @ https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...an-individual-for-information-about-a-vehicle
That’s just what I need Cobbett many thanks, I don’t want to go through my house insurance as I’ll only end up paying increased premiums because of it.
My take on it is I have house insurance to rebuild it if it burns down and that’s it, anything else I will sort.
I'd love retractable security posts just to add that extra layer of security, but just know they will get pranged and will lead to costly replacement, or fighting in the cul de sac when Trevor dents his bumper.
I just have the removable type that fits into a socket in the driveway, I’m on the third one now and last time it cost the driver £800 to repair the damage. I fitted it because everyone uses our lane/ my driveway to turn around in and my gate had been hit twice. Now they hit the post instead so I fitted a camera to catch who’s doing it.
Same reason I was considering really. Already have the cameras, but I can guarantee by the standard of driving I see, the posts would be bent by the end of the first day installed.
Not a fan of the police at all but I ended up filling in an online form that my police force do, I presume all forces have similar. Anyway had a letter today to say they are investigating it as a failure to stop. Maybe this will restore my faith in them somewhat.
