Home made radiator guard

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by The Hammer, Jul 27, 2013.

  1. I wanted to protect the radiator on the 1199, having heard a few horror stories of stones pinging off the front wheel and into the rad. Looking at available red guards they are silly money for what they actually are, and can be a mare to fit on the panigale. I had some aluminium mesh left over from doing the seat vents on my 748, so cut out a paper template or two before cutting the mesh to size, with tabs top and bottom. Its a snug fit, held in place by wedging the tabs behind the v piece. Aftermarket guards may be a nicer fit or finish, but for an item designed to take stone hits out of view Im not that fussy, and it cost less than a fiver!!

  2. Nice job Jim, did you get the mesh local? I'm after some of that. K.

  3. I got it from B&Q, 2'x1' fot a tenner, they have loads of sizes and finishes.

  4. Neat........now why not get a 10mm dia ally tube and carefully saw it down it's length, spread the cut tube slightly just enough to slide it on to the top of the mesh..........then in your Workmate, compress the tube until it goes flat-ish so it stays on the mesh......

.........you can actually get ally trim already shaped but I can't recall where from.....

  5. Ooooh me likey that idea.... Even some old screen trim would work.

  6. How about spraying black while you are at it - then you'd be pushed to notice the difference between the R&G guard I fitted and yours. Well except for a few more hours in your life you haven't had to spend taking the fairings off and fitting, and quite a few more beer tokens in your walllet !!!!

  7. I bought a big piece of mesh on eBay, about 100x30 for about a tenner delivered, for this same purpose

Yet to do mine, will in winter

  8. You can polish the ally tube though................

  9. just go to your local skips and look for old fire guards the mesh is the same and free.

  10. I think I willl go the screen trim route, not keen on bling and although I like the black finish, I fear paint will eventually flake off when a stone hits it. Will probably glue on some black trim to neaten the edges. Or I might just leave it...

  11. Nice job but just for the record, the Evotech I fitted took less than 5 minutes and was only £56 and did not require removal of any fairing part. It has 2 angled vertical tabs at the top which use the existing bolts between the upper and lower rads. This arrangement holds the guard away from the rad core so that it is not in direct contact giving a bit better protection from a direct hit from a Motorway Maintenance missile.

    hope this helps

  12. I made a grille for both sides. Powder coated mesh black and held in place with nuts, bolts and "Snap Caps". Radiators were treated to a satin black coating by "Camcoat"
