749 Hot Start Issue

  1. Already did the search thing so...

2003 749s, never a problem with cold start but after she is hot and I shut down and go to restart there is no response from the start button.

No sound, no click, no nothing. It's not the kickstand or the clutch.
If I recycle the ignition on and off 2 or 3 times then she will fire right up.

    Any ideas?

  2. you in gear? put it back in neutral and try it

  3. Bike in neutral
    Kickstand up
    Clutch lever in

Only happens when she is warmed up.

  4. check through your electrical connections as it seems that something when warm is expanding just enough to cause a break somewhere it seems

    does the fuel pump prime?

  5. Yes, pump primes and system goes thru check #1 and #2.

  6. just thinking... is the starter relay in good nick? clean the connections, maybe it needs replacing.

try the earth cable mod... essentially running another cable (a £5 Halfords one will do) from the (-) on the battery to the a clear/unpainted piece of metal on the frame/engine as apparently a poor earth can result in a hot start problem like you describe

  7. Could be pickup sensor. Any stalling issues when hot?

  8. Is the starter motor a bit sluggish? First I'd go through all the high current cables and starter circuit checking for corrosion and condition. The +ve connector on the starter motor is on the bottom of the motor body under a rubber boot. This can hold water and rot the eye connector. Whip off the fairing, pull back that boot and check it. Remove the ring connector give everything a good wire brushing and reassemble with silicon grease. Also check the wiring to the starter solenoid for corrosion and condition.

If you eliminate any bad wring, bad switches and the starter relay the next port of call is the ECU. The ignition switch powers the ECU on then that senses the start button. Electronics, when they get older do suffer from galvanic corrosion on any crimp or solder joint which increases resistance in the circuit. It is quite possible that this has happened and the fault only develops once the ECU has got hot. Also check the earth lead that goes to the ECU case for corrosion ETC. I've known this to cause all sorts of weird stuff.
