748 How Do I Tell An E From A Bp

  1. guys

How do I know which model my bike is?

It's registered as a 748B. But I keep seeing different comments on frame colour etc.

    My bike is 2002.

  2. An S or E could be a Bip iirc, with the most obvious difference headstock adjustment (2 lugs for the steering damper off the frame). Could be wrong tho, may have only been and R, its been a while since I owned an E

  3. If date of first reg is 2002 its an E........ unless it has titanium nitrate front forks, showa rear shock, 5 spoke alloys then is an S. failing that put a pick up

  4. Bip is an abbreviation for Bi Posta or 2 seats. As Bradders remembers an S could be either 2 or single but I think that the E was only ever a 2 seater although people did sometimes do a single seat conversion. The adjustable head stock stopped at some date which I don't remember so you might not have it. As ^ says, without the bling it is most likely to be an E. Andy

  5. Thoight nitrade forks was R onLy as they had stopped adding Ohlins

  6. OK.

    It was registered March 2002.

Grey frame, grey 3 spoke wheels BUT the previous owner changed the rear wheel to a marchesini 5 spoke, also in grey.

Has Dzus fatensers etc, but they could have been added.

the lower side fairings are black also, not sure if its originally like that, but it seems to be by looking at the finish.

Engine code is ZDM748W4, if that helps.

  7. Is the E model the same engine as the others (obviously the R excluded here)?

  8. Think so. It was chassis differences really.

  9. Ask Ducati, just give them the frame number

  10. First of all a great choice, when set it up right they're fantastic in the twisty stuff. I think you have a late model E bip.
With 5 spoke rear wheel/full system(looks big)/carbon airbox/looks like painted bottom of fairing and other bits.

S has headstock adjustment/nitride forks/showa shock/quick release fuel couplings and 5 spoke wheels . Disregard the vented faring and seat conversion on my year 2000 bip and an S looks like this.
P1040696.JPG I think a few late 748 engine top ends were of a stepped design where the cams are not level with each other when viewed from the side but know no more about why ect. Most engine are pretty much the same.

  11. Looks like an 'E' from the pic as there seems not to be the headstock adjustment and the 2-position damper mount. IIRC the 'E' also has the lowered exhaust cam heads as used on Monster S4 and ST4?

Show a close up pic of the headstock and bottom yoke to confirm.

  12. That was my thought as the easiest way to know quickly

  13. 'E' also has the lowered exhaust cam heads as used on Monster S4 and ST4?
Ah hah... is that all E's?

  14. Cheers guys. Great info.

So does lower exhaust cam heads make any difference? Or just a slightly different design?

  15. Don't think it makes much difference, same cams and valve size, just that the head was shortened to fit in a Monster/ST4 frame (hits the front wheel if not) although it might make the engine less 'tunable' with regards to gas flowing etc?

Not sure if they all had the lowered heads or not, a side view pic of either head will tell us if it is...

  16. Ok cheers.

If it doesn't make any difference then it's cool. Only reason I ask is that my local specialist asked if it was an E model when booking in for service, I said it wasn't but now I know it is I'll tell him prior to taking it in incase parts are different etc?

Do I have 50mm termi's from the photo?

Apparently has a JHP Carbon Airbox also.

  17. Lowered head uses different rocker cover and rocker pin cover gaskets, can't imagine anything else is different from a servicing point of view?

Termis look like 50mm as they don't have the 'widening' on the vertical mid-section pipes that the 45mm have (see the other bike above), best way to know is measure the pipe OD.

  18. JKC, it is a late E as already noted by others but with a few bits from other bikes, the fairings were all two piece single colour, that black bit is either painted on or a part to make it look like the carbon fairings with separate belly pans similar to the 996 or 998r. Es did not have Dzus fasteners and those have been added. The 02 748S has the same engine. The engines of the later E and S were supposed to make 97bhp at the crank (earlier ones 98). It is possible to get quite a bit more out of the stock engine with better breathing, filters, cans and an ecu remap.

If you check the frame cross member under the seat behind the fuel tank mount screw you can see when the frame was built (the date of first assembly is stamped there), compare with the date marks on the fairing and seat components and you can accurately date the bike's assembly. You will probably find it is a mid 2001 built MY02 E
