How do you 'core' an exhaust?

  1. I heard about this but found no decent info on how to go about it. I have a standard Monster 600 and am looking to cheaply add a bit of flavour to the exhaust sound but keeping it looking standard. Before i tear mine apart and wish i hadn't, is there anyone with info on where to start, which end to begin at, if it needs spot welds drilling out on baffles etc in order to dismantle the standard ones and what do people do once they've got them apart.

  2. Top Links! Looks a bit Heath Robinson but i understand the basis now. Next question is whether i take the risk and do it to my own cans or buy some replacements to try it on. Its a fine line between making them just loud enough for me but also keeping the neighbours happy at 5.30am every morning.

  3. I am soon to be changing my anodised ally can outer tubes for carbon fibre ones.....

Fortunately mine are 'straight through', so all (all ......apart from make sure various holes line up etc) I have to do is pull the outers off and wrap some new packing around the central perforated pipe and slide the carbon ones on....

It's a bit more complex than that, because my inlet caps are welded to the link pipes and the cans are bolted to the hangers with two M8s......so I really need to make sure I use all existing holes so that the rivets line up at each end.....

But if it is worth taking pics as I go......

  4. Personally I'd buy some second ones to core out. There is the possibility that the bike isn't going to run very well if you drastically alter the exhausts. If you modify the originals you then have a bike running poorly until you source some others. Additionally, for whatever reason, putting it back how it was is then a lot easier. You can also weigh up the cost at the outset when finding the second hand cans.
