How Do You Justify Owning A Bike ?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by tricolore, Aug 8, 2014.

  1. I don't know how many times I've heard '' I'm selling my bike because I just don't do the miles, I can't justify having that money tied up in the garage''....... presumably they had the money to buy the bike in the first place, if they sell it what are they going to spend the money on ? a holiday ? how can you justify that ?

Do you have to do 1000's of miles to justify owning a bike ?

I justify mine because it gives me an enormous amount of pleasure, I work hard and it's my release from day to day life, I don't have to do 1000's of miles on it.

  2. i don't justify owning one, i had to give it some real thought when buying the second. (bollox it was an impulse buy) but have spent the last year trying to justify it. some call it a midlife crisis i call it a wake up call. you only live once and yer a long time deed.

  3. Yeah the second bike is a big move, well the first time you do it. Now it makes perfect sense....well to me anyway :)

  4. And you have to counter SWMBO's comments of "you can only ride one at a time"

  5. I don't have to justify my bikes at all. I'm well over half way through my life and not showing signs yet of giving up trying to make sure I have toys I enjoy.

Being guilty about indulging yourself is a religious trait and my views on imaginary deities I am always happy to share.

Life is a balance and I don't expect heaps of gratitude for raising children solo, volunteering or paying taxes.

  6. Yep, and she can only wear one pair of shoes at a time......doesn't stop her buying fucking shoes.
Plus I can sell my bike, maybe for a profit. She's never made a pound out of shoes, or sold an old pair.

  7. My justification is that I need to fill my garage. It cost me a lot of money to build and it would be criminal to waste any of the available space.

(it is amazing how many bikes you can squeeze in if you try).

    ;)

  9. I cannot for the life of me think of any justification not to have a bike.

  10. My justification is man maths and wheelies. It helps having an italian girlfriend who would happily fill the house and garage with motorbikes as well. When we got together in January she basically said 'go get a bike licence or this is not going to work so well',....who am I to argue these things :)

  13. Yes but when it's full and you can't move to build your next project you have to extend the house to make room: so be aware of this before you go any further!

  14. Thats my kind of garage :)

  15. I don't have to justify one bike to SWMBO. She understands I like riding bikes and a man has to have a hobby :)

I also wouldn't have any problems justifying a bike for green laning in the winter. Or a track bike if wanted to do more track days. A different discipline needs a different bike right? :)

However I am struggling to justify another road bike, even if it is the Diavel and looks completely different to the 899. In her eyes it's still a road bike. :(

I'm gonna have to use some fancy footwork to get that past her in the new year. :)

  16. I don't know how you lot do it. To justify my second bike, I had to get rid of the car. Which is something I was more than willing to do. Still got works van so doesn't bother me.

  17. Tell her your gonna slowly turn the 899 into a track bike and that you need the Diavel for road use as the 899 wont be legal with all the necessary changes..... either that or get the Diavel anyway and either be in the dog house for a long while or be single again lol

  18. I was just thinking of buying it and making it a fait accompli :D

  19. They are expensive toys that's all. Some fish, own boats, classic cars, holiday homes, fly bloody planes. I would have a jet fighter if I could afford one. I wanted to buy a glider with a engine thingy flying machine, but I don't like heights.

If I had another couple of acres, id have crossers and a track.

It's all down to the bank balance. Justification? I want it, can afford it, I'm getting it. (don't tell the wife)
