959 How Much Exhaust Wrap Do I Need...

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by comesunt, Aug 13, 2018.

  1. Ive fitted an ally subframe. It has the lug missing for the front of the exhaust shield so I'm not going to put it back on. I'm going to wrap the pipe under the seat to keep some of the heat off the electrics running under the seat / subframe area.

    Any ideas of how much I'll need [in meters].
    Traditional or titanium; what's best?

    Thanks in advance...

  2. is the answer as long as a piece of string?

  3. and twice the length from the middle

  4. Or science the crap out of it:

    r = radius

    H = Rise of helix in one revolution (width of tape minus overlap)

    N = Number of turns (length of pipe to be wrapped divided by length covered by one turn of wrap)

    Calculate the length associated with one turn within the helix. To do this use the following formula:

    L = (H^2 + C^2)^(0.5)

    In this nomenclature, H^2 means "H multiplied by H" or "H squared." C is the circumference of the circle and is equal to :

    C = 2 x 3.145 x R

  5. Or, maybe to help decipher...grab some string and wrap at roughly half the width of the tape for length of pipe being covered to allow overhang then measure length :upyeah:

  6. Or perhaps someone who has wrapped a pipe could let me know how much wrap they used...

  7. Use rubber gloves. Thats all Im saying. Its itchy. Seriously, use marigolds.

    I did my mid pipe on my 1198 to stop it cooking my right calf. I used one roll. I wished I'd used two. But it wasnt that great so had them ceramic coated. Furthermore, after a soaking or two they begin to look tatty.

    I also doubt you'll be able to mitigate the heat from the pani under the seat using it. I'd re-install the heat shield personally. I also coated my heat shield with that gold stuff. I also did under my seat. Plus I used lieb speeds carbon and heat shield kit on subframe. Its much better, but still a lava bomb over 30°C.
    You may be better advised buying wrap to go round the electrical cable instead.

  8. Have seen more than one set fire in pit lane.

  9. Chris (@greencat) renewed the exhaust wrap on his 899 last winter and made a very tidy job of it too. Maybe he will pop along to this thread next time he's online and be able to offer some advice and information on materials etc...
