How Much Weight Change Before Spring Change?

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by comesunt, Oct 23, 2018.

  1. I'm selling my GSXR1000 track bike to a friend. 2010 with Ohlins all round.
Suspension is bang on for me; I weigh 13-13 1/2 stone
My mate weights about three stone more than that.
He rides mid inters on his R1
He lives in deepest darkest Spain.
I'd recommend heavier springs before he picks it up [at his cost]
    Thoughts ?

    Cheers,
    Bob

  2. You probably have 10nm springs in the front which is normal for a 80-85kg rider like yourself and come on most stock bikes. Your mate is 19kg heavier which is quite a lot, if he was running in fast group or racing he would probably need a 10.5 in at least one side of the front forks but he may get away with the ones in there if he is running in mid inters depending on how aggressive his breaking is.

  3. Here's a conversion table. It's not an exact thing since it depends so much on riding level and style. Stick a cable tie on the front forks and if it's bottoming out then you need to go stiffer.

    Weight l/r fork spring weight
    65 to 72 kg 9.0/9.0 Nmm
    68 to 80 kg 9.0/9.5 Nmm
    80 to 88 kg 9.5/9.5 Nmm
    84 to 90 kg 9.5/10.0 Nmm
    88 to 100 kg 10.0/10.0 Nmm
    95 to 107 kg 10.0/10.5 Nmm
    105 to 115 kg 10.5/10.5 Nmm
    111 to 123 kg 10.5/11.0 Nmm
    above 118 lbs 11.0/11.0 Nmm

  4. Mid inters? He’ll be fine. Just add a bit of preload and see how it goes. Worst case, £50 on a spring.

  5. Hi dave

Would you have the corresponding chart for the rear shock

  6. When you think that the difference between a full and empty tank is about 2 stone I agree with Bradders. Maybe a bit of preload to maintain geometry and he's good to go.
