I gave the bike it's post winter clean this weekend, total degrease, clean, foam bath, the works. Finished off by a full ACF 50 application via compressor gun. So the bike is sparking and all new again. I then went out for a blast with the other half on the back to my mates for breakfast. I noted the power was a little down but I was in urban mode and we were only pootering around town so didn't think much of it. I was too busy chattering away on the comms to her to really focus on it. This morning, I noticed it again. It's not an issue that's sometimes there, it's there every time I open the throttle, constant. I will pooter along, the bike is idling perfectly, no abnormalities at all. I can pull away fine, change up through the gears fine, but the moment I open the throttle to push the revs past 4.5k, it loses all power pretty much, becomes jerky and as though no fuel is going into the engine. What on earth could be causing this? I'm going to say it's a electrical issue as it's only shown it's head after the wash. Is there something I could have knocked or something that has a bit of water in it? Thanks in advance
Huh... I think I might be a bit dim... Is it possible it's the valve for the exhaust? As I've not onced checked or greased it since I got the bike and I keep meaning to I've done over 3k miles on it over the winter (November to now). Thanks
Just grabbed some WD40 from the buildings maintenance guys. Gave it a good spray with the cover over it so hopefully it will help a little. When I get home, I will give it a good clean up and grease it properly.
That would be my guess, when I had mine I gave it a good clean with WD every couple of rides post clean never had any probe.
Sounds like the exhaust valve. It can fail without throwing up a warning. Check the cable is free to move easily. Switching the ignition on/off with the cover off will exercise it and you may get an idea of how it is moving.
Well, I haven't taken the cover off and inspected it, but after the lathering of WD 40 from the angles I was able to at it. It's solved the issue. So tonight I will whip the cover off and give it a good degrease clean and a fresh load of grease. The ride home was a relief for lunch haha.
Hopefully you have found the cause. Alternatively it could have been that you drenched some of the electrics in your thorough wash and they have now dried out. Best to take care when you spray high pressure liquids around. After washing I always start the bike and go for a ride to dry it or if not possible use an air gun, hairdryer or similar.
Especially on the vertical pot. Ive had water get down there on a wash before on my 916 which resulted in one cylinder only.
The fault im almost certain will be the exhaust valve. Its a good idea to take the cable off the valve and make sure the valve is free to move in its housing, its this that gets jammed up and starts to stick
For a permanent cure have the valve disabled in the open position electronically (by CJS) or removed from the exhaust pipe. Lots of info on here if you search. Reminds me that I must get mine done before it plays up!
I will get a price from Chris at CJS then. I had a look just now when I got home, it's VERY rusted, must have never been treated. It doesn't close properly, it is very stiff, it springs back to about 85% closed. The remaining 15% you have to push. I've lathered it in WD40 and multi purpose grease. Hopefully it will do for now. I will either replace it, or if Chris's option is cheap, disable it.
I intend to remove mine completely and doesn't cost a dime - as did rivets - see below. [h=2]Exhaust Valve[/h]Took a dremel to the spot welds that hold the butterfly v/v on and took it out. Hope it isn't placebo effect but I'm convinced it is smoother at lower revs. Muckle chuffed
What is the use for it? Will the ECU not compensate for the position of the valve, thus possibly burning more fuel?
No because as far as the ECU is concerned the vv is operating correctly, there are no sensors aft of the vv for the ECU to get data from. So long as the requisite amount of spring pressure is felt at the actuator motor the ECU is none the wiser. As DenH mentioned, I only took the butterfly off the spindle, not the whole vv off the bike. I hope that made sense!
Just had the exhaust box replaced due to the valve sticking and it definitely stops all the low speed running problems. I wasn't showing any EXVL fault but it was causing a big problem at 6500 rpm.
If anyone is planning to do the valve mod the best thread to explain it is this one but I have not yet done the course on linking threads so put it in the search box to find it! [h=2]Listless running[/h]
Here you go freshage - take a look in this link: http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f6/poor-low-speed-running-fixed-12409/#post186410 I kept the thread tucked away in my favourites ready for when I eventually needed it. There's a couple of solutions in there including rivets.
Glad you did Mark as I couldn't find it. Looks like some dremel action coming up for me now that I know exactly what I am trying to do! thanks
