Hypermotard 796 or 1100

  1. hi

I'm currnently looking to sell on my MV F4 and buy (or I think I am) a Hypermotard. As much I love the F4 and all things MV, it's use is restrictive and a very expensive toy that sits in the garage for 11 months of the year.

I could do with some advice on the best Hyper options around the 6k mark. The research I've done to date is leaning me towards a bling'd 1100S on a 2007/8 plate but not sure how this compares with the new 796. My first thoughts are the 796 does not come in an S version and I do like my Ohlins and Brembos and also think for a fat bloke such as myself, it may be a bit on the tame side compared with the 1100S.

Having read some of these posts I now also have the aircooled vs water issue to consider as well?!?....I'm aware that the tank range is v poor but has anybody fitted the 6 gallon tank add on, was it easy, can it be done at home, what was the cost and can it be purchased/purchased and fitted in the uk.

I've been used to touring even on the MV and although I won't be able to do 150mph plus down Spanish and French motorways (I think I'm growing out of that stunt) the twisties would be just as much fun and the bike could also be ridden in and out of the local town without the need car park sized turning circles.

    Thanks in anticipation

  2. I haven't ridden a 796 but I would say the 1100S would be a great bike for the job. Great fun and lots of oomph.I wish I had never sold it!
I fitted the large fuel tank on mine and there was no difference in the look or the ride of the bike. I ordered it and had it fitted by my local Ducati Dealer ( Moto Rapido). It wasn't cheap but I can't remember costs!

Just take one out for a test ride and you will probably be smitten.

  3. I have just got an 1100s, i had a Rsv4 Factory previously, its a great bike so far anyway, riding position is high so visibility is very good. The bike pulls like a train and changes direction with minimum effort. I am thinking of the bigger tank option and will be contacting Ducati Glasgow for a price all in. There are youtube vids showing how its done if your handy with a spanner?

Personally i would go for the 1100s, it has the ohlins and brembos etc as you mention, and if you went for the 796 you may find after that you wished you had went for the 1100?

    Happy Shopping

  4. Hey

I bought a 796 a few months back. I had a tiger 1050 before, mainly to do with a 70 mile commute to work daily. I love the 796 and The way it handles. I love the noise it makes and the uniqueness of the bike. The 796 comes with a slipper clutch too which is simply awesome! The small tank range is on a par with most sports bikes anyway and I have learned to live with it. The only grumble I have about it is the silly seat bolt that's made of such poor, soft metal and makes accessing the battery a nightmare. This is set to change very soon!

Despite my love and happiness for the bike, I do feel (sometimes) that I should have tested and bought the 1100 s or evo. I don't know if this is because I want to squeeze a bit more out of my bike on A roads or if it's because I'm trying to be more macho. Maybe it's both.

Practically the 796 does all I want. I have fitted a carbon hugger (a must for any hypermotard if there's the slightest possibility of rain or mud!), and the bike is so much fun. Finances made the 796 the better option all round for me. After two years I will consider a new bike, and the 1100s is top of my list. Best I get saving now! Good luck - whatever you choose you won't be disappointed!

  5. Having owned and ridden an 08 1100S for 19,000 miles and then trying the 796 ... I know which one I'd go with!
The 796 is way underpowered after the 1100, it's almost a joke. I really disliked the 796 and was left so disappointed by it. In contrast I also had a couple of days on a 696 Monster and that was great fun! No idea what they've done to the 796 but it's a really poor imitation of the 1100.
