Hypermotard Electrical Problems

  1. Sorry but this is a bit long winded.
So got talked into going to mcn live by my mates 22 of us went. Pissed down from the start but about 150 miles into the journey while travelling up the m6 my 2011 hypermotard 796 suddenly lost power in the fast lane. I got to hard shoulder and it was running really lumpy. Revs would go upto 4500 then gauge just shooting up and down. Revs then decided to go up to 2500 and running like a back of bolts. Then decided not to idle at all. Plenty of power in the battery and was turning over and starting without effort but wouldn't stay running. It was showing a pkup fault on dash. I sprayed everywhere with wd40 and started pushing the mile to slip road. I read on another forum about a similar fault code having something to do with a speed pick up sensor knocked out of place and this was rectified by turning the wheel in 6th. When I got to the top of the slip road I started it again and tried to pull off but it didn't have enough power. Rolled it and got it going up the gears after a while it just fired into life and ran smooth. Rode a little and parked it up while I had a coffee. Started it up again and although engine light was on it ran fine. Rode it a couple of miles and got back on the motorway as was running fine but within a mile it all happened again. pushed it to a safer location (I was on a bridge and the hard shoulder was a live lane). Phoned the aa and waited the 2 hours to be recovered. tried it a few times and still and ran like a bag of bolts. When the aa man turned up it started and ran fine but not risking it again got him to take me to Skegness.
As you can imagine being the only one out of the 22 of us with a ducati I suffered a torrent of abuse and because today was a dry day I left a day early to get home (the aa told me a second recovery for any electrical fault would be chargeable. Set off home and bike was running great no warning lights or anything. Rode it 170 miles staying mostly a roads, got on m5 and it lost power completely, wouldn't start and dash fault code said coil. Checked all connectors sprayed everywhere with gt85 (no rain today but may have been still wet?) left it a few minutes and it started. Rode home the next 100 miles (mostly motorway) no issue at all.
So after all that annoying drawn out stuff has anyone got ideas? Is it just the rain or something else like regulator rectifier thing I've read about? If just the rain what do you use to protect the connections? The aa dude said to get some electrical contact grease. Will that work?
I've had the bike 3 years and it's done 12800 miles. Regularly serviced.
Any advice would be appreciated. Obviously all my mates advice involves either selling or burning.

  2. The pick up I think is the crank sensor , sure I have read these can play up , suppose the coil code could be the coil failing or maybe water from front wheel getting thrown up at it , seems a bit to much of a coincidence that after you sprayed it with wd you was able to do another 100 miles

  3. Yeah that's what I thought. Only thing is I'd done 170 miles or so today before it broke down again and the roads were bone dry, not even a puddle. I would have thought the heat from the engine and the wind would have dried it out.
Really frustrating though and I've got a few other trips planned this year so want it to be dependable.
I'm going to give it a good clean tomorrow and get some type of contact grease see if that sorts it.

  4. You could have got moisture in front coil only a little causes problems once engine cooled down it can run for miles then once water vaporises in front coil (this is the one that takes water spray from the road) it can cause this type running issues. I'd remove front coil clean and dry put a hair dryer blowing hot air down to really dry the recess. Then when putting coil back put a little high temperature grease around the edges of the top of the coil pack to seal it stop water sneaking in.

  5. With it taking 170 miles to show its face its going to be hard to diagnose , I think I would change the crank sensor if they are a known issue , the coil could of been water ingress or could have genuine fault after doing a lot of miles , hard to say but you have to start somewhere , if it breaks down miles away again and you have to get recovered and pay for it because of a recurring fault , the recovery costs would be more than the educated guess at the parts the codes high lighted

  6. I've ridden it the 45 miles for service today no problem. Royston (REPS MOTORCYCLES) looked through the connections and there was some moisture in the vertical cylinder coil and also crank sensor. All dried, used some gt85 and put back together. checked and cleared fault codes, reset the TPS and bike running lovely. Rode the 45 miles home, no issues at all so just have to see how I go.
I've ordered a fenda extender thing, I know they don't look the best but hopefully it'll stop a lot of water.
