Hypermotard To Multi

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by Stevo66, Oct 12, 2022.

  1. I'm beating myself up here with the thought of changing to a 1200 Multi from my 2016 939SP Hyper.
Just fancy a bit more touring capability but don't want to lose the fun factor, appreciate it'll be less fun but perhaps the extra power and the fact it's a very capable bike will negate this?
Anyhow, anybody done this and was it a good idea or will I be left missing my Hyper?..I'll be looking to go for either a 1200 or 1260 Pikes Peak, so at least it'll look the same, from a distance!..tia.

  2. I went from a Multi to a Hypermotard (821 SP) and had even more fun. Lighter, much more wind blast ☹️, didn’t feel I lost much in the power department. Agreed you’ll benefit from the touring ability.

  3. For me,I’d turn the Motard into a close clone of the Strada, large screen and throw over panniers.

For certain I would test ride a Multi, you may find it too lardy.

    Or N+1. ;)

  4. FFS why would you  I tour on my Hypermotard occasionally, how much touring are you planning on doing?

  6. Probably twice a year, one trip to Spain of @2000 miles and Wales (with wife) of @750.
My Hyper is well set up with screen and throw overs, the main issue for me are the faster sweepers where I feel the bike is a bit vague, then we get to the tighter stuff and I wouldn't want to be on anything else!

  7. I pretty much did that, taller screen and sw motec panniers and it worked v well. My issue was more the faster sweeping bends where it seemed a bit vague into and through the corner, maybe I just need to trust the front end more?..the tighter the road the better, but we all know that. I'll try a Multi, I think I know the answer as I've loved having a light-ish bike again and also whilst the looks are a bit testing a Superduke GT
    .

  8. Fan and sh*t springs to mind!...how do you find the Multi, did you have a Hyper previously or any experience? ta.

  9. Had a 2015 DVT from new, it’s a hell of a fun bike ! ( when you get rid of the stock scorpion tyres )
I had a ktm super Moto some years ago, obviously the multi isn’t as nimble as that was, but honestly the multi can be hooned around the twisties.

  10. I went from a HM to a MTS. I went for the 1200S Touring version and it's an incredible bike, especially in Sport mode with the upgraded Ohlins SCU.

My riding has changing from blasting for an hour or so to going out for the day with a mate or going on longer journey's.

The HM is a superb bike but the tank range, comfort and weather protection isn't ideal for the riding I do now.

The MTS is my first ADV style bike and I love it. I've done ~5000 miles since May with a 2000 mile tour and I think it's the best bike I've owned.

I originally intended to keep it for a year to test out if an ADV type bike is for me but it's so good I've upgraded just about everything and don't intend to sell it unless a test ride on the new Rally next year blows me away.

  11. Thanks, that's the sort of feedback I was after. Sounds promising!

  12. Thanks for your feedback, it's sounding like I'm not going to miss out on the fun of the HM and gain a more usable bike for longer trips. I also think the riding position may suit better as well as arm pump has never been an issue on any other bike but after a days riding I really need to back off.

  13. I've not had a Hyper, but fancy one as a second bike one day. I'd say the 1260 Pikes Peak is the one to go for, and doubt you'd regret the change for a minute.

  14. Thanks, i'm pretty much decided that's the route to go, I'd like to keep the Hyper but that's not my only bike and three's too many apparently!

  15. There’s never too many!

  16. I went to the 939SP after a torrid time on the Multi Enduro 1200. Couldn't get along with the seat arrangement at all, and the all too often false neutrals did my swede in.

The 939SP is a real hoot of a motorcycle.

  17. That's the problem, the Hyper is such a laugh to ride that I don't want to lose that side of it... test ride a Multi and go from there seems to be the way to go, thanks.

  18. Multi's can be a real hoot to ride if you ride on the right roads.
I just came back down from riding around in Scotland and it really was a proper buzz.
On the twisties, I only used two gears, 3rd and 2nd ...the torque does the job in 3rd from pretty much walking pace to as fast as you dare go on tight Scots roads..... 2nd gear for diving into tight blind corners and let the slipper clutch sort out the braking.
Wheelies in either gear are optional.
I would advise you to buy a DVT though, they are much better equipped and less frantic than the early bikes. Monster amounts of fun mind :)
Oh yeah, 200 miles on a tank of go-juice too

  19. Thanks, that's a glowing endorsement and yes I'd be looking at at DVT bike definitely. Any bike that can be fun in Scotland at this time of year has got to be a bit special!

  20. I may be able to help a little ..

I went brand new Hyperstrada 821 to brand new Multi 950 and came back to a used 939 Hyperstrada.

I have ridden the bigger engined Multis and they don't do anything bar big touring better than the Hypers and they are nowhere near as much fun to throw around day to day, my wife who is 6ft is no less comfortable on the Hyper than the Multi and for me for 90% of my use the Hyper is grin inducing, even crossing London a couple of times a week, the Multi was no better out on the country roads than the Hyper and was way worse in town ... wouldn't have another .... big, cumbersome, quick yes but in the same way as Tesla is .. I'd rather stay Hyper and play Traction Control Bingo with it !!!!
