1st post - so be nice! Just bought a 796 Hypermotard which came with Zard end-can, still in box. Fitted underseat can(s), with baffles removed and been out on road twice. Both times engine management light came on at some point, but second time it also went into limp mode. Is there a way to run Zard exhaust with standard settings or does it need remap or similar? If I put baffles back in will it help? I've also read on here that someone was advised to start-up and leave on tick-over for 15mins, for bike to reset, anyone tried that? Cheers
EXVB? Please advise where it is and how to prevent sticking. Also checked the diagnostic and it has message 'coil' with Error above so I assume bike is running on 1 cylinder. Maybe nothing to do with end can change. Could this be caused by a dodgy connection under the seat?
EXBV is the exhaust butterfly valve. It is found on your exhaust link pipes. They are prone to corrosion and need lubing with copper slip periodically. If you have a coil fault try swapping the coils over to see if the fault number changes from horizontal to vertical. If it does then coil is likely to be faulty. If stays the same try replacing the coil/injector/fuel pump relay. Hopefully someone will chip in with its location for you.
It was a private sale so no warranty there. I took it on a 200+ mile run when I first bought it and no issues. Garaged it for a week, put on Zard can and got engine light on after 5 mins on first run and 30 mins on second run. I thought it may be the exhaust but the diagnostics is saying 'coil' so I'm thinking it may not be related to the can. Unfortunately the diagnostics does not say which coil. So I'm left thinking is it really is a coil fault or a dodgy connection as it is intermittent and could be caused by vibration as it seems to random (engine cold or hot) when light comes on and power drops off a cliff edge! Thanks,
the coil is very susceptible to temperature if its breaking down, contact your local ducati dealer to see if they have old coils you could borrow with a view to buying new when you find which ones at fault.........did you replace the plugs ?
I never thought to replace plugs, bike was serviced last Aug at 1000 miles (done 700 miles since). Should they need changing by now? Like the idea about borrowing a coil but think the dealer will insist on purchase. If I remove the coils, is there a way for the dealer to check them out? 1st time the engine light came on was literally minutes, would that suggest connector problem or could it still be temp breakdown? Cheers,
+I really aint sure, try posting on the technical section for help. there are more experienced guys on the forum than me. you could have a wonky plug so don't get fixated with millage, it wouldn matter if it had 10 or 10000 miles. if coils then maybe e bay is your friend.......try asking for help on the tec section mate.
The 796 doesn't have an EXBV so that's definitely not the problem nor will having baffles in or out make a difference, other than to your neighbours of course . I've run my 796 in various stages of modification since I bought it in 2010 and did a thousand+ miles in between stages and never had any running or engine management light issues. 1st was the Zard can then a de-cat pipe (with Lamda (Exhaust gas) sensor retained) and then a full re-map at BSD in Peterborough where the Lamba's where then removed. The only thing I did was after I'd fitted the de-cat pipe I reset the throttle position sensor just in case which is done by turning the ignition on and letting the dash run it's full cycle and repeat 3 times. It sounds to me as though you've either manager to disconnect/damage a wire whilst fitting the can or it's pure coincidence and it's a coil pack, plug etc. braking down. Hope that helps, good luck, Chris
I had a very similar problem on my 2012 796 and it was a connection under the seat, sorry no more info it was under warranty so went back to the dealer
May be getting somewhere here, especially after the last few comments. Stopped thinking it was the Zard can and looking at connectors and coils. There is a connection block under the seat that when 'wiggled' cut out the ignition completely. So the vibration when I'm riding could be causing an intermittent fault on one of the connectors there. Unfortunately I'm off on holiday tomorrow so won't be able to get any further for a fortnight, but thanks to all who have responded, you've given me some good advice. (And maybe saved a new Ducati owner a few quid!)
Mine did it when going 70ish down a dual carriageway, management light on and what I thought was limp home mode but apparently was only one cylinder firing.
Exactly the same thing last time it happened - M1 70mph. Just glad I was on inside lane! Gave me a bit of a shock when power drops so much.
