Hyperstrada Suitability

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by philg25, Oct 6, 2015.

  1. Getting on a bit and think my days of sportsbikes are coming to an end. Trying to narrow down my possible future bike purchase and wondering if the Hyperstrada could fit the bill. I am 6'0'' tall so wondering if the bike would be too small. Would be using it for weekend blasts and the odd European tour, sometimes 2 up. Any hyperstrada owners can give me some advice?

    Thanks Phil

  2. Saw my first one on the road last week. Looked and sounded really good but definitely looked too small to be comfy 2-up. I went away from sportsbikes with a KTM 990 SMR. The SM, SMR & SMT are all basically the same bike and are just plain awesome. Bigger than the Hyperstrada so better at the 2-up stuff, but still a supermoto style bike so the fun element is definitely there. I'd still have my KTM if it hadn't been stolen. Just as happy on track, road or 2-up touring.

Alternatively the Multistrada (my current ride) is still awesome. Certainly don't feel like you'll be a bumbling tourer on it. Weekend blasts and beating sportsbikes are its forté.

  3. And check out the reviews online... KTM usually wins it against the Hyperstrada.

  4. Thanks JH, I suspected it may be too small, I'll have a look at the KTM as that may be ideal.

  5. My mate has a ktm 990 smt and it's incredibly thirsty

  6. Well ducati can't even make their multistrada do decent mileage so I don't hold out much hope for the hyperstrada. I was expecting impressive things when I saw the 200 mile plus estimation on the range computer. Yeah right! Sub 150 mostly. Get better mpg in our corsa. You'll probably be getting 130miles to a tank with the KTM, mostly because it's so fun to ham fist it everywhere.

  7. The mpg on my hypermotard was pretty crap until I took it to CJS....it went faster, pulled better, was smoother and used on average about 20% less fuel after....since then all my bikes go to Chris and based on that ive even had our car done - mpg is better on that now as well! and in second gear its a torque monster now....brilliant....

  8. I won't be doing that with the corsa. Maybe on the multi though ;)

  9. I'm a 6'5 Hyperstrada owner, I don't find it too small now i'm used to it and the very front biased positioning. If anything at 6'0 you may struggle to flat foot it unless you get a lowered one which I've not heard good things about not least bottoming out from the centre stand. Fuel wise 150 miles to a tank is about the top you will get, 100 when pushing on. 2 up wise I've only ever had my brother as a pillion, at 6'1 he was able to be a passenger but I'll not be planning any long distance trips with anyone his size on the back. The bags aren't waterproof but do come with dry liners which take up quite a lot of space.

All that said when you get to your destination and can play on the twisty roads it puts such a smile on your face, keeps up with most things up to 100 where my lanky frame inhibits acceleration somewhat.

  10. I have a Hyperstrada as a 2nd bike as the girlfriend likes to come out but the 1299 is too mental.

I wouldn't say 6' is too big. Probs about right for this bike. I'm 5'10 and I can't flat foot it. I've done a lot of 2's up as that's the main reason I have it and without luggage on its fine. However, with luggage she says it's too restricting and she wouldn't like to do any distance.

We did a trip to the Isle of Man this year. First time for me there on anything other than sports bikes. Thought I would find it dull, but the hyperstrada was amazing over there even with 2 up. It's a lot of fun, you can just pin it and it doesn't hang about. Big smiles.

It's ok for touring alone (I've been to Assen) but if you want to tour 2's up I think u need multistrada or equivalent.

I've looked at changing it but I just can't seem to part with it as without the luggage on it has that hooligan feel which I didn't feel with the multi. In hindsight I would have got the hyper SP and stuck a grab rail on it.

To answer your intended use... Weekend blasts yes. Odd European Tour. Yes. Occasional 2's up yes (without luggage). Are there better bikes to do the above? KTM as stated (not ridden one but took the super duke R out and that was immense but not pillion friendly), multi as stated. BMW S1000XR? Try all 4 and take a pillion and add any luggage. Depends how much u want to spend I suppose.
