I’ve Got Smoke!!!!!

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Wooly46, Oct 8, 2019.

  1. Guys, what would cause my positive battery lead to smoke? This 999 is giving me a headache!!!!

  2. loose lead or poor crimp, short in the starter/ charging cuircuit.

  3. Post coitus?

A hell of a lot of current going through it.... or high resistance.

  4. This is where it’s smoking!!

  5. You didnt reverse the polarity when connecting up the battery?

  6. No, red to pos black to negative. Is there polarity on the starter solenoid?

  7. What would cause high resistance?

  8. Corrosion between the lead and the conector,by the look of it.

  9. Old age and moisture from years of use and washing. Must be at least 13/14 years old now possibly more. Time for a checkover and refurb of the electrics by the look of things.

  10. Got them today mate, thanks. Problem is I think I need to make some type of connector for all those live cables to a new battery terminal! Any ideas?

  11. Live cables? Do you mean the Earths you mentioned earlier...

  12. Yeah the lead has broken down for sure, causing loads of resistance in the wire which is why it’s smoking, don’t mess around, just replace it, it’s carrying a lot of load

  14. Phil, any ideas on how I’d do that as there’s no simple plug!

  15. Think you need an electrician - I guess your not working within the standard battery box with it's constraints? If so it will be difficult to fit a connector box further back. Get professional help (for the wiring I mean) o_O

  17. Heat due to resistance,

    Resistance due to poor connection

    Poor connection due to corrosion.

I know an old lady who swallowed a fly.
