Its in for first service on Friday and I have done the first 600 being very careful indeed. Its seen 5500 rpm for a second or two but spent most of its life so far at 3k to 5k and I am getting frustrated !! After Friday I believe I can go to 7k, have others stuck to this after the first service did you have the resolve ? I think the 7k restriction is another 1400 miles !! thanks David
I did my 620 in 2 rides and also getting 1st service on Friday, along with a few minor niggles. I'm pretty sure I've cleared 6k a couple of times during overtakes and agree that 7k will be a useful lift in revs for normal riding, but it's for quite a long mileage (another 940 miles!).
Rev limit......WHAT!!! rev limit, mine got a good thrashing from day 1, thats what a warranty is for.....
I did mine to the letter for one very good reason, Ducati told me to, and I wanted to keep them sweet for warranty.
Make sure the bike gets to 624miles before reaching the dealership. Or you need to go back & get the service warning light switched off. I was told I could periodically carefully give it higher bandwidth rev's but followed the warranty to the letter. Also into the second run-in with careful steady speed application. You can still reach 100+ mph with 7,000rpm or less. Lots of gear changes & different speeds is a good thing to bed in the gear box.
Watch the youtube vid of Ducati factory rolling road. They screem the nuts off the thing. Not saying just an observation.
Firstly, they could be test bikes, and secondly, if they are not, then its a very brief period whereby the RPM's are probably not as high as you think. Thirdly, with modern tech and data logging, are you prepared to take that chance of caning it when your warranty is at stake ??
Running mine in by the book. Been running demo bikes in for Dyrons LEEDS for years now so the scroats don,t wreck them. & i used to build big block Chevs for the drag & stock car lads.
I've always kept the revs below 6k for the first 600 miles on all my bikes and then it's a fast build up over the next 100-200 to the redline that was until I chased a blade and zx10 around wales for five days after my first service on my new and first multi and to be fair it kept pace within reason
Used the 7k on way back from 1st service and was underwhelmed until I checked the speedo, a good 5 mph faster than last MTS. It's a deceptively smooth motor for a big twin, this DVT!
Picked up my 1200ST a week ago, will have 600 mile service done on Wed. Per my dealer, I avoided two things: 1. lugging the engine 2. long drones at constant speed In fact the direct advice was to take it into the hills straight from the shop and do strong pulls followed by strong engine braking. I obliged... I think the "official" break-in is done for legal reasons, not mechanical ones. Ymmv.
New rider gets on 150hp bike, twists throttle too much, loops bike, sues Ducati for not warning them to take it easy. Tort law in the US is pretty out of control. Like said new rider
And so if we're experienced then we should cane the arse off it from day one? Hmmm, I remain sceptical at best, but you crack on!!
More than one mechanic has told me exactly that. Modern manufacturing tolerances aren't like the old days. In fact some have stated about the worst thing you can do is go easy on it, particularly if you cruise at a constant speed with very little load. The engine needs plenty of throttle and plenty of engine braking to seat the rings properly. That doesn't mean run it at redline for an hour, but I think the whole "stay below 6K" is extreme. As always, ymmv.
Personally, I may be cautious but I feel the mfg knows more about proper break in than I do. They designed the engine and have much experience with new and well broke in engines. I don't follow their instructions to a 't' but try not to do anything radical during break in.
