Idea For Stop Light

  1. After my accident this summer when one absent-minded guy hit me while I was slowing down, I decided to install some stop light blinker. I observed the market and seen that the all these devices are perfectly not smart. They are not associated with circumstances and just blink in any case, anytime you press the brakes.
    Well, it means that I have to make it myself! :)
    But how it can consider a circumstances? Connect it to a bike's electrical components? It will be too complex, especially if there is a CAN bus.
    Accelerometer? But in this case we need to set device in definite position or make the calibration procedure.
    I decided to use a microphone to get a revs through an exhaust sound. We know a type of engine and so we can to calculate revs from a sound pulses.
    What do you think about the idea of blinking by stop-light only when revs are higher than 1500? This method allows us to prevent blinking in safe situations.
    Installation will be maximally fast and easiest of possible - only cutting the stop light wires and making 4 twisting wires.
    When you start to press brakes on high speed, initially your stop light will be turned on, and microprocessor starts to calculate revs. If they higher than threshold, stop light starts to blink. If not, it work as usually. Time of calculating will be less than 0.5 sec., I think.
     
  2. The telematics co I was working for was using a mems sensor for accident detection to associate g-force to vibration from metal to metal contact. I wouldn't rely upon it working 100%. Also, with your solution,wouldn't it be on all the time? Or are you thinking of linking G with vibration too?

  3. I think that you will find that blinking/flashing stop lights are not legal in any EU country.
    They may be okay wherever you are though.
     
  4. flashing brake lights would seem to be legal, according to this article from another biking forum;

    it is as much about the detail of how the activation happens, e.g. pressure switch in brake circuits allied to speed sensors or similar. working on the engine speed could be a problem, i.e. exhaust pulses are not relative to speed and are dependant on what gear you are in, and nor do they take into account if you are braking hard or gently.

    following the above article theory should lead you on a better course.

  5. Yes, I know about an accelerometers that they can sense an impulses of ignition. I saw their diagrams from different vehicles, I could see each flash in cylinders, and a door closings, and even when a passengers stepped into saloon. But at first we want to try to get data from the microphone. One italian team did it in their devices, we want to repeat their solution.
     
  6. I don't know about laws but I really know about usefulness of this solution. BMW already installs their own solution as an option!

    I thought enough before I start to spend my own money for this project :)
    If you remember how you ride (fucking winter, we can only remembering!) you'll guess that the revs of your motor was higher than some threshold, while you press a brake, only when you was in unsafe situations! Potentially unsafe, sure. When you brake into a narrow traffic, on a parkings, at the end of long path on neutral - your motor near the idle revs, yes? Why do you need to roll a party??? Let your stoplight lights still like usual!
     
  8. I would have thought that pressure is the best measure of braking urgency.

    With modern led arrays, a core could be a constant, conventional brake light brought on by light lever pressure but increased pressure could bring in brighter, pulsed light, maybe even progressively.
     
  9. Not sure what the OP is really trying to achieve: a separate light or integrated into the rear cluster?

    I'm with the above comment: pressure and negative G combined would be the way to provide one of the emergency only flashing lights (or hazards), engine note will give nothing but false positives. Either you'd have to set up as an individual (not all bikes are ridden at 4K revs) or have a far more complex algorithm that overlays pressure, G and revs. Bit like traction control.

    You can buy an integrate light that flashes on braking before it goes solid. And f*cking annnoying they are from behind!! :)
     
  10. Accelerometer can't reflect some situations when you start to apply the brakes before your bike is really starts to decelerate. You see the danger, your fingers on brake lever, and you press it immediately. Faster do it than read it :) Your bike still moves with the same speed, a usual stop light starts to flare up, but accelerometer still sleeps... My device in these priceless milliseconds starts to calculate revs, and then interrupt a signal for blinking. I think, my device will start blinking earlier than accelerometer-based.
     
  11. It is not easy in installation. Well, I even haven't any idea how it can be performed.
     
  12. Maybe it's a translation thing, but I'm struggling to understand how tabs will drop or raise (not sure what you are measuring) before brake pressure high enough to start stopping?

    A'meters are quick enough to use for crash detection which triggers airbags etc. Also I'm guessing you'd need to figure in ABS. And what about whe you start slowing then realise you need far more brake to stop? E.g. Sun in your eyes and the car in front is stopped not stopping so initial reaction changes from slow down to 'shit, stop!' :)
     
  13. We want to measure the revs through the sound of exhaust.
    I know about A-meters, we use them in our projects (mainly I manage my own company, in satellite fleet management industry, we make our own software&hardware). But I think that there may be situations when speed still the same, but there is need to warn all drivers behind. To take their attention.
     
  14. How about a falses from an A-meter when bike goes downhill?
     
  15. ?! It's about variance. Not constant. So unless you chuck it off a cliff ;)

    But that's why pressure plus A would work best imho :)

  18. What about developing a system that tracks the eye movement of the car/vehicle operator and when they lose concentration shocks the moron back to reality? Or force people to retest Regularly???
