Ideas for Northern Spain Picos Tour in October?

Discussion in 'Touring' started by hottubbiker, Aug 29, 2012.

  1. Me and a couple of mates are ferrying across to Santander on 3rd October for a 12 day trip to the Picos region - me on my multi 1200S touring, mate #1 on his Suzuki 600 and the other on his BMW RT. We're gonna speand a couple of days in Santander for the Moto Piston rally and then into the Picos for some decent riding. Has anyone done this trip and got any route ideas to share?

  2. Yep - have used the seaside resort of Llanes as a base for some of this, but then have gone out and found places to stay en route. From Llanes the N621 up through Panes and Potes is pretty impressive. You can't really fail on the roads there....except be prepared to rarely use 3rd gear on some of the roads. Also - don't get carried away with the bends - some of them have very steep and long drops. I've done the area 3 times and it's great. Fantastic food, amazing scenery - beautiful clean air.

When the weather is great you can't beat it, but it does stay covered in snow quite late on into our Spring. In October you should be OK unless it rains.... In the mountains it will help to have a smattering of Spanish to get by with - a good map will help too.

  3. We were there in June and I have to say that the Picos are breathtaking. Some of the best, and quietest roads I've ever ridden. The N621 goes to Riano, small sleepy place where you can get fuel and there's a nice restaurant with fabulous views. From Riano the N625 runs to Cangas de Onis, a great road with a good surface except for some tight and twisty bits where the road picks it's way through narrow gorges. Then you can take the AS114 back to Panes.

Road around Riano. There are lots of roads, and scenery, of this quality in the Picos de Europea . Have a superb and safe trip.

This was taken on N621 amazing roads and scenery although I cooked my brakes on the hair pins;). Road surface is excellent but some of corners do tighten and you have no run off and as said previously you'll probably not get out of third. Enjoy!!

  6. I have done the Santander ferry a few times now but have always gone East to the med. Amazing roads, scenery etc. Usually take around 12-14 days return. Head across to the Med on the French side mainly and then return across northern spain, again, spectacular scenery and awesome quiet roads. Never headed into the Picos region, maybe we should have a look!

  7. We've were there last year (though in the car) Astirias and Galicia both fantastic, but I would reinforce the warnings about some of the bends. Also most of the lunches we bought had a bottle of wine included in the price, so plan a lazy afternoon?

  8. Ribadesella is another nice place to base yourself, not far along the coast from Llanes.

Whilst there, indulge in plenty of Sidra and try out the Fabada Asturiana.....
