Hello Guys Can someone help with my Multiproblem ? i have a 2010 Multistrada 1200 which i really love and despite the fact that i have another bike the Multi is still my favourite..... BUT i also have an issue with the start/kill switch (ignition) Sometimes it will start and everything will be fine, but there are other times that it wont start at all and when i press the ignition it will make a woosh noise (see attached video) https://youtube.com/shorts/GoFLeVL5gxs?si=iAYF7XADMBGbHWCi i have changed all the small relays (x6), starter solenoid, kill swich, i cleaned the side stand sensor, checked couple of cables and it seemed that it worked BUT after couple of days it happened again Every time that this issue happens, the only way to start the bike is by bridging the two poles of the starter solenoid Please if anyone knows anything with a similar issue HELP MEEEEE Thank you
There are 2 thin wires that come out of the starter solenoid, one’s black the other is probably red or red & a n other colour. Check you have 12v to the solenoid trigger, 12v through the solenoid trigger and 12v from the trigger back to ground. I’m not sure what the whooshing sound is, it almost sounds like the fuel pump running when you press the starter button.
Is that noise the exhaust flap? My bike had it deleted before I had it but does the system automatically check operation before allowing start-up ?
Yes its the fuel pump, there are some times thought that you cant hear that either. Yesterday everything was working, i went for a ride with the multi and every time the bike started normally with no issues
Sprag Clutch ? to tell you the truth i never had an issue with the clutch in general, apart from a small difficulty to change to 2nd gear after a long trip Something that i noticed is that when the weather is cold, the bike will start normally most of the time, but in a hotter weather there are more chances to have this issue and then i will have to bridge the two poles of the starter solenoid in order to start the bike i think that the issue might be in a ''damaged cable'' or something like that, as @West Cork Paul mentioned
Hello @chrisw, apologies for that, i don't know all the technical terminology in English . I was thinking that since from the starter solenoid it always starts (when i bridge it) that the problem might be between the ignition button to the solenoid. The think is that i took the bike to two different mechanics in London and none of them could fix it or knew what it is the problem thank you for the link
This sounds more and more like an intermittent power supply to the starter solenoid. Have you checked for corrosion at the start switch?
I had exactly that on the Raptor, corrosion in the starter button. Beware of taking it apart mind when cleaning it because it'll no doubt contain a little spring that'll boing off into the nether regions of the garage. Might be wise to check all associated switches as well, kill switch, side stand switch & any clutch lever/neutral switch it may have.
Yes in the beginning i did that to the old starter button, i took it apart and i was aware of the little spring, anyway i installed a new starter switch but i still have the issue, not often though as before. i have checked and cleaned the side stand sensor too (it was a bit dirty, well a lot actually) i will check the gearbox position sensor just in case sometimes thinks that there is a gear and doesn't let the bike start the sensor is in a very ''exposed'' place so it might be dirty or something
There is no direct connection on your bike between the starter button and starter solenoid on an MTS 1200. When you press the starter button that tells the ECU that you want to start and the ECU then sends a signal to the starter solenoid to engage the motor. So you need to check the wiring from the starter to the relevant pin on the ECU and the wiring from the relevant ECU pin to the solenoid and the other side of the solenoid to either earth or live depending on whether the ECU switches an earth or a live as an operating signal to the solenoid.
Hello Rushjob Thank you for the message, I kind of checked the wiring as far as i could with the tools i had, and also measured them with a multimeter. They seemed ok, but as i said, i checked only the wiring that i could reach with the tools i have The rest i will have to take it to a mechanic Generally i was thinking for a new wiring harness as its a 2010 model and its parked outside (covered), exposed to weather
