996 Immobiliser Recommendation (insurance Requires It)

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Fastmonkey, Jun 29, 2015.

  1. Well I'm delighted to be picking up a 996s tomorrow evening but my insurance company won't insure it without an immobilizer.

    I hate alarms/immobs. but I can't persuade them otherwise.

Can anyone please recommend one to me please that is the cheapest, least hassle and least likely to go wrong ?

  2. The Datatool system three would be a period alarm\immobiliser for your bike. I had one fitted from new when I bought my 998. The good thing about them is that they can be repaired if you need a new alarm main board. In fact I had to do this when my one went after some years.

You can pick them up from eBay quite cheaply and I have a complete one as a spare. The only problem is that no doubt they may require it to be professionally fitted with a certificate to prove it.

If that is the case then it is going to cost a lot more and you will only be able to buy a new alarm\immobiliser to have fitted. If you have to go that route then the latest Datatool alarm or a Spyball would be your best bet. I was quoted over £400 when I thought my Datatool 3 had gone and a new alarm had to be fitted. In the end I got a main board for £10 and replaced the old one and it has been fine ever since.

Datatool will not supply wiring diagrams to the public so you may have to do some searching on the internet to get a copy of the instructions but beyond that it is easy enough to sort out and fit.

  3. Thanks for the info, appreciated, I've been offered a Datatool Duo fitted for £250 by Steve Jordan Motorcycles, they have a few old ones in stock from yesteryear......so might end up with that. I'm not sure I'm competent enough to fit an alarm and start messing about with all the electrics myself.......

  4. That sounds like a decent deal and will include an up to the minute alarm, worth consideration.

  5. I think it will have to be proffesionally fitted to be acceptable to ins co.:(

  6. Datatool always worked well on mine, never an issue

Or you could just remove the wheels every time you park up. Cant get more immobilised than that :upyeah:

  7. I've just been through this now while trying to get the 998s insured. Seams a bit odd that they didn't ask for much for the 848 but wouldn't touch the new (older one) without a Datatool SC4 red cat1...
Anyhow, found some bloke from Sheffield who'll come up and fit it for £275 all inc.

  8. bloody hate the data tool system 3

  9. I switched to Carole Nash in the end and they didn't need an immobiliser.

  10. Datatool in my experience are a pain. Meta systems seem to tick all the right boxes though and I think are cheaper too.
I remember a youtube video of how to fix a Datatool. Bloke just put a hammer straight through it.

  11. I've had a data tool and acumen cat 1.1 and there all much the same.

The data tool was ok but gave up the ghost after a few goes at stranding me and the acumen whilst although good, I wouldn't use the company again as they kept changing names and nulling any guarantee (extended too). If I was to have another it would be datatool but I'm more than happy with the almax fitted and no alarm.

  12. Never ever touch an Acumen. Had one fitted on my 848 evo. Went wrong under warranty was asked by Acumen to send unit back for inspection etc. Never heard from since even ater 20 plus emails and countless calls. Bridged out and still bridged out.
