Importing A Frame...

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Air Duck, Dec 6, 2017.

  1. Any help with this??

I've found an immaculate low mileage 1198 frame with documents in... Japan (ffs).

Anyone able to tell me what I'd have to do to register it in the UK??

  2. Why bother? Many don’t unless you want it on the road. Just keep receipts as proof

  3. I was thinking that it'd help if I ended up selling it as a built bike mate

  4. Iirc you will need to build the bike and go thru the registration process as if importing a bike from Japan.

The dvla/govt website isn’t great but manageable

  5. OK cheers mate I'll try and struggle through it!

  6. You are not importing it as a whole bike.

There will be no import papers to prove a complete bike was shipped.

Migjt have to get the be built up

  7. Any idea what crap I'd have to go through after it's built mate?

  8. Probably an SVA (Single Vehicle Approval). There was a thread not so long ago about trying to obtain a Certificate of Conformity to register a bike in a different country. That might have some information in it. Andy

  9. Cheers for that, yes I remember that painful thread but couldn't find it here... AARRGGHH!!!!

  10. Excuse my ignorance, but even after paying for shipping and all the paperwork involved. Would it not cost the same or even less to just get a uk registered frame here in the uk and build a bike from that. Not sure shipping something like that is cheap, when i used to work in the courier buisness things would be charged on a volumetric basis for shipping larger items.

  11. Depends if he’s going to get the plaque and box too and pass it off as an R ;)

  12. Yes it would except I can't find one, the frame with shipping from Japan works out around 450 quid, plus import fees and VAT will probably take it near 600 quid, still a lot cheaper. But yeah - I'd rather find one here for sure!

  13. Yeah I'm really known for selling my stuff eh?

  15. So what are 1098 type frames going for? especially as you can't find one, what do you base your prices on?

  16. There is a cat D 1*98 being broken on here IIRC.

  18. My experience of buying a cheap frame and building it into a bike means an expensive bike. Unless you've really got most of the parts it'll almost certainly cost less to buy a complete bike - in my case it would've cost less to buy a new one.
