Importing From Europe

  1. If you buy a bike from Europe ( Inc Eire ) what Tax and/or VAT do you pay. if there is VAT who's rate do you pay ?

What's the general additional cost if buying a bike from the EU ?

Presume if you go over and pick up yourself you can get round any import duty...

  2. There is no import duty between EU member states . If the bike is brand new then I think you`ll pay VAT @ 20% here as it comes through customs. Not sure about second hand as VAT will already have been paid somewhere.

  3. Depends I got into this a while back looking at a bike. If its under 6k Kilometers or less than 6 months old its considered new and your liable for VAT in the country you import it to.

Notice for New Means of Transport here

    HM Revenue & Customs

Otherwise you'll need the VAT original recipiet to prove VAT was paid in the other country and you need to tell HMRC, I think its within 2 weeks or they could fine you £500/week or something equally draconian for non disclosure

  4. Having imported several vehicles new and old, it was quite straight forward to do (not done anything for a few years).

Lots of paperwork needed, so do your homework BEFORE you buy anything!

    Happy hunting
