Howdo! Has anyone altered there headlight to one that works??? I've changed the lamp but although its brighter I believe the fault lies within the configuration of the head light it's self. Seen a few car head lamps of similar size. ........anyone had any success or modifications? Any info or links? Cheers Pablo

I have tried the OEM one and the twin halogen headlight version....not a lot in it.......However, what I found with the OEM one is that the adjustment is fairly crucial, otherwise dip beam ends up being pretty bad because there is a hole dead centre in the beam pattern...... ......mind you, compared to headlights on the last road bikes I owned in the 80's and early 90s, I was pleasantly surprised by the OEM one. AL.
This is the HID kit in my old CBR4 Triarm? Superb bikes! As standard they come with a Jap-only I4 bulb?? Both bulbs were 35W60 and terrifying at night, my 400/4 had a better headlight! The tags are a strange fitting? You can however fit H4 bulbs by folding in/cutting off the lower tabs. :biggrin: Unfortunatly the increased 55w low-beam frazzles the switchgear, meaning it can take forever - to change from low beam to hi-beam, with darkness in the middle! The HID kit only pulls 35W & uses a sliding shield to provide hi and low beam? In the end I just ran the HID side, such was its awesome brightness!

Nope! The kit pisses all over "brighter" bulbs? Really quite good! Will be getting a HID kit for the car this Winter as it too has a shit low beam...
I wouldn't have a bike without a HID now. The effect on car drives is palpable! ooooooo big word alert...! :biggrin:
tried bighter bulb, marginal improvment best solution for night use is to leave ducati at home and drag vintage halrey out of the shed with its 5 3/4" diameter headlight......... the ducati headlight is about as much use as a chocolate teapot at night even with a double brightness bulb
As has been mention on other threads part of the issue is the poor wiring particularly the poor earth circuit. Improvements can be made by taking power direct from the battery. HID upgrades should be treated with caution as the MOT is being updated to include the fitment of these, and from what I can make out it is not clear if the rules are being applied to bikes.
The one time I did get caught out in the dark on my carby ss, I went for the high beam and while fumbling the controls found the turn all the lights off switch! Truly terrifying on a high hedged twist back road. Emergency stop, found the lights and left them on dip, went home, slowly. I have one of the "100% brighter" citroen saxo chav bulbs fitted to mine, definately brighter than standard. The mot guy gave it some close scrutiny last year, still passed. These are old bikes, aren't these small nuances all part of the charm?

Hate to think how much time/money/parts has gone on the charming bike but 15years on and it's still there. And one major thing I love is that you see the real benefit of the modifications, compared to say a GSXR which in truth isn't far from the mark. As for the crap headlight this is one charm I wanna get to rid of.

I installed a hi-lo beam in the SS http://www.hawkcaralarm.com/H4HiloBeamMotorcycle6000kXenonHidHeadlightConversionKit.aspx. Needed a bit of jiggery pokery when getting the connectors in to the rubber compartment and keeping it all tight to stop water coming in, so in the end got it quite taught and wrapped up with waterproof tape. I stuck the ballast on the frame right next to the air hole on the fairing to keep it cool, but seeing that it was only hi that needed more power from the ballast, it never got warm. Dip was better than stock and hi was bright but the headlight lens scattered everything quite a bit if not angled correctly.
Pablo - had a look at that hi-lo projector unit you mentioned, seems a good option! Only fkaround would be the horrific bulb cost? Maybe worth waiting until the tech improves on these?
