Improving brakes on 916 track bike

  1. I'm considering af brake upgrade on my 916 trackbike during the winter, something that improves the feel of the front brake at the end of the straight (and other places off course). I'm trying to avoid throwing big money after it if possible and I wonder if I can use better brakes from other Ducati models?

I will be changing the brake master and possibly the calibers but I would like to stay with the original wheels/discs/front fork.

  2. Front master cylinder and a set of decent pads will give the biggest improvemnet for £'s spent. Either look at a Brembo radial cylinder 19x18 or the master cylinders off the 848/1098 are straight fits and 999/749 will work but need converting to seperate reservoir.
For pads on track, take a look at Bendix MCR. Awesome performance for not a lot of money.

  3. A master cylinder change along with new pads, fresh fluid and braided hoses gives a great setup. Cleaning the disc correctly with brake cleaner and bedding the pads in should see you with a great set up. I have ran with the standard 40mm spaced brembos with PF 95 pads and brembo 18/19 M/C and I found it a great combo. Setting up your existing brake system, ie cleaning, good pads, M/C, braided hose, good fluid should see you right.

  4. Thanks a lot, good advice.

I don't really know if I have 40 mm or 65 mm bolt spacing, it looks like 40 mm to me: http://www.radmer.dk/web/916.jpg

The 916 is a '95, originally from Germany.

  5. as to cost :

    1. Pads
2 braided hoses ( 916 were notorious for bad OEM brake lines)
    3. master cylinder ( Brembo is very fine but if cost is important to you , have a look at accosato and ISR)

  6. I'd agree with your assesment on the bolt spacing. I've got a set of 996R 4 pad calipers with a set of 40-65mm adapter plates to put on mine, so I'll let you know how bigger a difference over stock there is

  7. All 916 had 40mm spacing, the 65mm came in with the 996, so unless the forks have been swapped etc.

Those in the pic are 40mm.

  8. What's with those different diameters? 19x20, 18x19 etc.?

  9. Brembo Brakes - Master Cylinders

19mm - bore size of cylinder
    18mm - pivot from cylinder. more control/feel - race
20mm - pivot point from cylinder. less control/higher bite - road

  10. I have been offered a radial brake master from a 999/1098 at a very reasonable price.

Would I be happy with it for track use??

when applied on braided or kevlar hoses

  12. 20 mm = 1 or 2 finger stopping... :)

  13. If you don't have it I may well be interested...

  14. Thanks, I bought it....

  15. Not on a 916 but an old monster, I changed to Brembo radial m/c, Brembo P4 calipers and fully floating cast iron discs. All done separately, biggest difference was the calipers, least difference was the discs. Fanciest looking is the m/c though.
