Just curious if anyone else uses something on track that really is not normal i guess by normal i mean a sportsbike or something of significant value or rarity or not even competitive. I recall seeing a guy on an old GS850 in the inters group at oulton a few years ago smoking many of the riders and in the top 1/4 of the group - only to ride it home after. I personally use a Honda CRM250AR trail bike, i feel very comfortable on it, its dead slow, often sneered at, but can strangely achieve some mad lean angles and lap times for something limited by 35bhp.
I love unpractical stuff on track. People make such a big song and dance of having to be super serious with all the gear and superduper bikes needed just to get onto the start line when it's completely un-necessary. It's just a big road with less traffic for christ sake Some of the most fun track times I ever had in cars whilst drifting were in utterly ridiculous vehicles just ragging the hell out of them.
Track days are for exploring your bike at the end of the day. It's not racing so lap times are irrelevant unless comparing with your own so context means nothing. Go out and enjoy whatever it is you have!
I shared a garage at Brands (Indy) once with a chap on, I think, a CCM R30. (It may have been another moto/supermoto, though, can't remember for sure.) He was quite literally insane and absolutely everything made him laugh like a loon. He was laughing while on the bike, he was laughing in the garage while he pulled marbles off my 999's tyres, he may even have been laughing during the briefing. I have never seen anyone have such a good time on or around a bike. He knew his way around Druids and Graham Hill though, I'll give him that!
Took my ancient Honda Xl to Brands because my Ducati started playing up the day before the trackday, managed all 7 sessions, slightly twitchy with the knobby Nylon tyres but a lot of fun.
The great thing about that it that you already know that the bike will be severely limited, so you just get out there and ride. I never get higher than fourth around Brands on my 1098
There was a C90 going round on the Brands Hatch taster evening a couple of weeks ago! Not really sure there's anything that's not inappropriate for the track anyway?
@CRYSTALJOHN I just gave you a medal not to say thanks but coz you deserve the medal I love unconventional stuff, in any walk of life, power to you Doth's cap and exits stage left
I had a Sprint ST complete with top box and panniers go around the outside of me on paddock hill bend a couple of years ago.
I just remembered - Wee Johnny B's CB500 . Looked like a pile of junk but it went well enough with WJB on board
In the early 1980s, I used to proddy race my Ducati 500 Pantah, but usually finished last - my excuse is that I couldn't afford to drop it
