Anyone come across this idea before? More to the point, how does the later injection model compare with the carby in terms of power and general riding? 1991 Ducati 900SS, RARE WHITE FRAME MODEL, FITTED LOW-MILES INJECTION ENGINE | eBay
Lucasz (on here occasionally ) did this to his Monster 900 but also converted back to carbs - think I would have done the same.
Couldn't find anything for that user name, but came across the following http://ducatiforum.co.uk/f41/carburators-vs-injection-7786/
Loads of DD racers have done it, taken a 583 motor out and put a 620 injected in. Seems a fairly straigh forward swap if you have the bits. Not sure how the tank fits on an SS tho as they are different shapes, whereas I think monster is the same
Oh god is that an old thread. As bradders said on monster it is easy. SS just check if stock airbox fits. If it does so will tank. If it does not either modify stock airbox or check if old tank fits new airbox
DD guys run no airboxes a lot so makes it easier, or you could change the tank to a later ie Ss tank?
There is a MKI Superlight on my website that has an injection engine in it. Have a look here Mk I - Ducati900sl.com (The Ducati Superlight register) it is MKI #311. It has a little bit of info about it.
Lovely bikes, one and all. Apart from that black one with the red mirrors... Thanks for the link st3v3
If I was going to bother doing it, I'd go for a DS1000 motor. I suspect one may just as well just build a special from scratch though, you're loosing the identity of both donors...
The black one is going to undergo a full resto by Simon who did MKI #110 very recently so should look very good when finished!
Did mine, everything fitted without any problems including the airbox. Converted the tank to run the FI pump - actually used a Triumph pump as they're the same... You just need to fit a sleeve into the rear engine bolt as it's 8mm on the SS and 10mm on the SSie. Get a piece of 1mm thickness, 10mm OD tube from B&Q, insert into engine, line it up inside and mark where to cut. Easy!
He was fine before, then afterwards the power scared the shit out of him so much he became the president B-)
Its all top end....and a good tuner with a few thousand crinkles to spend can make a 583 as quick as a 620...
Imagine the bottom and mid range of the 900 carb model with more (and a less pronounced drop off) at the top end.
The engines feel completely different. Going from 600SS (583cc carb) to the 620ie (618cc fi) was a 15hp increase from 48bhp to 63bhp (both figures were on a dyno), so a noticeable increase in power. The FI engines run far better (smoother, more torque) and produce more power, so there is a marked difference when going from the carb to FI equivalent. The main difference is in the valves, as the 600 was way under specced. The 620 used the same sized valves as the 750 carb engine!
The Black one with the red Mirrors is now half stripped down and the Ghastly carbon sticky back plastic has been removed watch my posts On Superlight MK1 # 171 in this forum and hopefully the ugly duckling will end up like my other MK1 SL #110
