Inner Cam Belt Covers

  1. Morning all,

This may have been covered before, but I'm just want to clarify something.

Have been doing the timing belts on my 600 1995 monster. I noticed that on the vertical cylinder the inner back cam pulley cover (the rubbery plastic bit that covered the cam pulley then goes down the back of the cam belt for about 4 inches) has come away from the cylinder and is rubbing on the belt. I have read that this is a common problem on pre 1998 engines. Is it to do with the heat of that cylinder deforming the plastic? I've tried tappingnit back in, but it is bowed out and won't stop in place.
Anyway, it needs sorting as I can't have it rubbing on the belt. Do I simply cut off the bit that is in contact with the belt? Of is there a revised pulley cover that won't deform with heat?

I've read that it's only pre 1998 engines that have this issue. What changed after 1998 so that this issue is not apparent?

    Thanks for any help.
