Hi all Trying to install some new head SKF bearings, for a restoration project I will be selling once completed. I've carefully tapped in the outer race as far as it will go, inner race sitting within. There are two rubber and metal dust covers/washers which came with the bearings. I am assuming that one of these needs to sit on top of the bearing race? However it doesn't seem to sit right. So either it is not required, or have I just not seated the outer race fully? Should the outer rim of the race sit just flush and level with the frame, or when fully home should it appear recessed below slightly? Outer Washer (part number 069137020) in place - sitting too high I'm not even sure if that rubber/metal washer is required on the SS, as it's not showing in this diagram? https://oem-bike-parts.com/en/parts/ducati/1995/900-ss/frame-fm-012262-frame Massively grateful for any help or comments!
I've been here recently with a 900ie, I think the issue is that, afaik, OEM was a sealed ball bearing race, where the replacement is conical roller that doesn't have a seal integrated. Brad the bike boy talks about this for a 748...the dims (and therefore the part codes he quotes) are not the same, but the explanation is correct I found. My solution was to add a washer as a shim under the rubber seal to ensure it was effective without binding. Brads explanation here Cheers Grant
ck_uk Did mine there should be something in one of my posts. First, I did not bother with top. On the bottom I bough a separate metal / rubber seal cover which is installed under inner bearing on yoke. I did this but found the rubber was rubbing on the bearing outer in the frame when bearings nipped up. The seal / cover was already on by then so I just cut part of the rubber seal off. It then freed up the steering to a more acceptable level. Yours does look thick as mine was. search 900ss Assembly (1) Cheers Gaz
@ck_uk I know this thread is old but I was hoping you could confirm the SKF part # you purchased. Also, did the dust seal come with the bearings or did you have to purchase it separately? If, can you pls provide that #? Thank you very much and merry xmas.
