A car insurance policy is up for renewal and I intend to change companies. What happens if I take out a new policy with a new company several days before the old policy expires without cancelling the old policy and thereby effectively have two policies running side by side for a few days. What are the issues, does anyone know ?
why do you need to have two policies running at the same time? Set the new one up to start at the time the old one expires.
I want to start the second one online to run from tomorrow (to add my daughter) and I can't cancel the first until Monday by phone (I am assuming that this is the case over a weekend, I could be wrong ?).
Don't think your supposed to have more than one active policy at a time. Which policy would you claim on if you had an accident. If investigated, would look like you were trying to do some sort of insurance fraud ie: insure car twice and try to claim from two different companies for the same accident. Guess, as long as you don't have an accident, and no one hits you .... You'd be ok.
The original company would not include my daughter, hence the move to another company. Fraud would only be an issue if I did try to claim from two companies, and that isn't going to happen. But you are right, which company would I claim off and would they say claim off the other ? I might just have to wait to Monday to sort it out.
In the event of a claim either insurer could refuse to pay out. On the other hand there'd be no problem with the old bill; as long as you're registered as insured for ANPR purposes they won't bother you. Just get it done, a couple of days ain't gonna hurt.
Your no claims can normally only run with one policy so technically if you used your no claims for a second policy it could nullify the policy in the event of a claim.
