Insurance Renewal

  1. I thought I would share this snippet of utter nonsense as it may be useful to others...

The insurance on my MTS runs out next week and I called my insurer MCE for a renewal price since I hadn't received anything in the post.

After spending 20 minutes or more on the phone confirming that none of my details had changed I was quoted a price of £240. This was £110 more than I paid last year so I asked why there was such a big increase. The rep then got me to hold and came up with a revised price of £216.

I still felt this was too big an increase so I used the "The Bike Insurer" website for a comparative quote.

Top of the list with the best price of £139 was MCE.

I called them back to check the policy was the same and to try and establish why there was such a big difference in price. The person I spoke with confirmed that the policy is exactly the same and that the price is frequently much lower if quoted on-line.

This strikes me as insanity, I've been with MCE for the past 4 years so why don't they just quote their best price at the outset? Not only was their original renewal price over £100 more than their web price but, had one of the other reputable bike insurers come in cheaper, they would have lost a customer.

Since my new policy will have a different reference number I guess the next thing I will have to deal with is getting them to request details of my no claims discount, from themselves.

  2. I just did the same and renewed on line with the same company, under the question who was your last insurer for proof of no claims I put 'you'. They sent me a letter confirming my previous insurer had confirmed the no claims :)

  3. That's good as usually online price is new customer sweetener

  4. My 6 wheel policy is due in 4 weeks i'm expecting problems as my car was attacked by a ram on Dartmoor causing £2100 in damage.Should be interesting.

  5. Enjoy the irrational world of insurance where they prefer to want new customers than actively retain existing. I welcome the day a company is brave enough to charge existing customers less than new based on superior service. Never happen until the model breaks.
