Insurance - The Small Print.....

  1. I have been looking at quotes to insure my new multistrada and went to a number of companies.

I was particularly interested in fitting a full termi system and declared it on application. All quotes showed, on the face of it, it was not being a problem and all companies provided a quote. However, when I read the policy cover details the exhaust listed in my policy documents did not make reference to the termi but referenced an "after market exhaust system". This in turn has the specific requirements of being both road legal and not increasing the power by more than 5%.

The termi is published specifically as not being road legal and therefore it's use on a road bike would invalidate the insurance in its entirety - not just in respect of not covering the value of the exhaust. Equity red star was the underwriter of most of the policies.

There are many thousands of ducati's sporting termi exhausts, how have they got around this? Legally!

What prompted me to check was when at the dealer sorting out the accessories for my bike they mentioned a customer had just had his insurance voided because he had not declared to his insurance company he had an aftermarket exhaust (apparently not even a termi). His bike was a write off and they had walked away from him. Fortunately no other vehicle was involved so no third parties were seeking damages from him.

I just loved the sound of the termi but it looks like it's not an option for me.......I need to be properly insured.

I hope someone on here can contradict this!!

  2. In January 2013 my 1098s was stolen from out of my garage. It had Termi end cans fitted and these were listed on the insurance policy and there value was added to the bike value. When i was paid out 2 months latter, i got the value of the bike and the Termi ends cans. The 1098s that i then bought came with a full Termi system, that same insurance company is still insuring my bike and are fully aware of what is fitted on it. As far as i am aware, if you tell the insurance company, pay the extra premium (because they will charge more) and have it listed on your policy......................then you are fully legally insured. If it was any different, i would not have been paid out on the claim for the first 1098s.

  3. This just what I wanted to hear! The last tel call I had on the subject was today around 330 pm with ducati insurance. Can you pm me with your insurance company details? Please!

  4. Ok so firstly ducati (at least for the 848) list full systems, e marked silencer kits (they were £1700!) and non-road silencer kits at £1200 so in answer to the first bit, If u don't buy the system that is e marked your bike is not 'road worthy' and therefore can't be insured (legally) so, check to see if Ducati list an 'E' marked silencer with removable baffle (technically also not road legal if removed but the can will still be 'type approved' and then u have a decent middle ground.

I have just insured mine with bennets and declared 'slip on silencers' and the air filter is covered under there list of 16 (no need to declare) mods so that was okay. The baffles should remain in my exhausts but at least I'm covered and could take them out for 'track days' that's about all u can do mate :-(

Failing the Termignoni option look at Akrapovic as they make a really good range and won't screw the bike up, or arrow, also nice.

  5. No need, the company is AXA. They were the cheapest for me using MCN bike insurance.

  6. Not tried axa but the ducati full termi system is not road legal and it is the only system they offer for the MS. You can get a termi slip on but it is a cosmetic item.

  7. You are surprised a non road legal system may not be covered?!

  8. No. I am surprised I have seen over a dozen on the roads in sunny surrey (not!) and none it would seem are insured. Not sure they realise it but either way they no better than someone who just does not bother to get insurance.....

  9. You may also see somone straying over 60 in a national

  10. Yep, exactly the same as a non insured druggie :Arghh:

  11. Read the small print.... If you really want to understand......suits people not to I guess.....but nightmare if you are unfortunate enough to have an incident with one....call me old fashioned but if I, or one of mine were unfortunate enough to be in a collision with an uninsured rider and it was their fault I would use any and legal means to bury the b#stard and get adequate recompense (if that were possible). We all know the rules and they are there to try ensure fair play and no one gets hurt.

  12. Over sixty, on a ducati? Get a life! Speeding is one thing, having no insurance is another.

  13. Is it a contributing factor? And you'll likely find its the end cans not the system, but then an insurer could also claim a dark visor is illegal, never mind other aftermarket stuff

This is just scaremongering. They simply will mess you about on a claim on your bike

  14. Speed kills. Don't you read the ads ;)

  15. Non insured druggie might be viewed differently to someone who does not have a drug dependency and chooses for financial reasons nog to have legal cover. I do not hive a f#ck about what happens to them but what happens to the innocence third party. My 21 year old daughter was killer by an uninsured Eastern European driver. Money did not come into it as that would not bring her back. The individual was driving for a further six years Bedford the police finally caught up with him. In the intervening six years he had no insurance (or licence ) to drive in the uk...

  16. Apologies for the typos!

  17. When I got knocked over on my 1198. When the assessor arrived my 1198 had miraculously installed the OEM cans. Unless declared, change em. Insewerence are like the most weaselly of all weasels. So you have to fox em. They won't catch me with my trousers.

  18. Ultimately I think u just need to weigh up the pros and cons mate. If u lived in a REALLY rural area with very low crime rate etc and u keep your nose clean then maybe the risk isn't as much. Ps why do u need a full system? What is wrong with the slip on? Does it need more power? I have definitely gained HP with slip ons and a remap, no question! And the headers are still stock

  19. The law is the ław, speed, visors, mot's, theft it's all the same. It is in the interests of the majority. I love the sound of the termi....

  20. Thats not his point

The point is having a termi system fitted which is either illegal or mot declared is the same as some scroat who chooses to pay nothing at all
