Quick bit of help please . Thinking of getting my kids an ipad each for crimbo. How is the 3g enabled ,my son has an iphone with contract ,my daughter a HTC with pay as you go. How will they use 3g Ipads . Can they use their simcards in them ? In other words how is payment made. If it's to much hassle and money they'll have to make do with wifi only. Thanks as you can tell I am not up to speed on this.
They will need a new SIM I think. You can get pay as you go or contract - all of the mobile companies offer both.
Why not get the wifi version of the iPad and then tether them to their phones as Wifi Hotspots. This is what I can do with an iPad 2 and iPhone 5 on O2. Would appear that the HTC can act as a hotspot providing the service provider allows tethering on the contract. In reality I tend to find wireless hotspots using BTOpenzone as I have BT Broadband.
If they already have a data allowance on their mobile phones, they may be able to tether, meaning they can connect to the net via the phone. Not all operators allow this, and some only on certain tariffs, so worth checking what they can and can't do first.
I'd also suggest tethering, I have an iPad with a sim card, they dont take standard sims though, you'll need a data sim and if you then get a PAYG chip the balance will evaporate if you dont use it meaning if your only an occasional 3G user like me you'll end up paying for nothing most of the time. I bought another iPad as a present recently and made a more informed decision to get the wifi only version this time. I occasionally tether the iPad to my iPhone and this works just fine, most of the time you'll just use the wifi, dont bother with the 3G unless your out and about a lot with no options to tether or access wifi hotspots
Thanks fellas , I'll get wifi , they can tether if poss, if not they can still use their phones. I thought cellular would have been good when they are out and about in their cars but if they can tether then that makes the purchase cheaper for me . Thank you.
I have an iPad with payg sim/3g. I only load it up when I need to and know I cant get wifi. Incidentally 3g doesn't work abroad.
Trying to hide the hotel porn.....? wi if only for me, I get more than enough coverage using bt hotspots.
