iPhone charging, cheap option

  1. Hi Folks,
I just thought I would share my cheap option to make an iPhone charger, wired to the bike.

Before I begin I must apologise for the lack of pictures

You will need one of these

Also, some heat shrink, PVC tape or self amalgamating if you have any, to keep the water at bay and some small tywraps. It can be done without any wire, but i added wires, so as to keep the originals as long as possible. You will need a soldering iron

The idea is, to strip back the GPS connector see this link

Then, when you work out what is pos and neg, you can solder them to the micro USB plug. Centre is +12v, the springy bits are negative. Once done, you will find you can charge your iPhone.

A standard length iPhone lead is the perfect length to route above the radiator to the loom that goes past the headstock.

Before you do the final routing, heat shrink/tape it up, to keep it watertight.

I've yet to see how this goes when the bike is warm etc...

This setup won't cost much and is easy to put together.

If you prefer different routing you will need a longer cable, eBay has plenty of these on offer.

Clearly, this post will also work for other phones or iPhone 5 etc. as you just need the micro 12v USB adaptor that suits your phone

    Cheers

    Alan
