I've never once noticed the 899 getting hot. Certainly not like I've read about anyway... Back end of summer I went through central London in horrendous traffic in 30 degree heat, I still wouldn't say it got much hotter than any other bike I've ridden... I've read stories of people getting heat rash and burns ? I attached my Drift camera to the rear swing arm of my bike and you can see that under load the Y pipe goes red and even spits the odd flame now and then which is pretty cool! The inner child in me does like a good flame So is it just me? FYI I wear leathers and have a comfort seat...
The 1199 does get hot, although not unbearably so.... would imagine the people who get burns are the flip flops and shorts brigade who pootle around town anyway... Interestingly I read on one of the American forums before buying mine that the heat is reduced massively if you buy carbon rear sub frame covers as that is where the heat radiates from closest to the rider.... makes sense seeing as the engine and frame are one I suppose??? On a side note, nothing like a good fire breathing exhaust
Firstly.... We all need to see this video? Sounds really cool.... I noticed the heat the first time I rode it home but it was a 28 degree day and I was stuck filtering for 30 mins on the m25!!! I've never felt it get anywhere near as bad as my 848, and it's not uncomfortable. Was funny riding with my mates on 748's sat fanning their legs at traffic lights, I was fine
That would explain why i can't find the heated seat switch, I've rather enjoyed it on colder rides! BTW standard cans on my 899 and it still gets a little uncomfortable in leathers
The termi's may make a difference, as does wearing leathers I guess. I do find it really hot in Kevlar jeans
Things get a bit heated on my 1199 with the full system. Most of the time it's ok as a good draft keeps the temperature down but if you get stuck in traffic it can become uncomfortable quite quickly especially whilst wearing leathers in summer. I agree with above, we need to see the video of your hot pipes spitting fire!
I can't post the original 'hot pipes' video because it shows 'other things' like the front wheel getting accidentally lifting up a few times by very strong gusts of wind etc. When things warm up a little (pun intended) I'll stick the camera back on and do another one for you. Thing is it'll only glow when you give it some real stick as you can imagine. FYI I'm on standard pipes, not Termi's!
Here's someone else's vid, for now Watch from around 1:25 if I remember correctly when he starts giving it the beans. Flames at 1:57- I think
That 899 video has a cored exhaust too I think, don't know if the totally standard version would get those size flames on the overrun?
You will be let down lol! I thought about coring my silencers but because I plan on doing track days, I imagine it'll be an issue....
Yeah, that's one of the main reasons I haven't looked more into it. That said, Knockhill up here really doesn't seem to care, could run a straight through no worries! [emoji4] If they were cat-less but could pass noise tests I'd jump on it!
