What year? The bike has the shower head injectors, which on the 748 series bikes only came on the R. That said, AFAIK, the R's came with Ohlins front forks and steering dampers. That bike has Showa. Furthermore, the front sub-frame bracket looks decidedly backstreet quality.. I would question the bikes authenticity as an original "R". I may be an R engined bike in my opinion. If you want to know the originality of the frame/engine, I'd suggest e-mailing the information team at Ducati who will gladly help!
Showa nitrided forks fitted as standard on up to early 2001, Ohlins steering damper was a DP option only but was fitted to the later 2002 models to help them sell. Air box has been modified to take aftermarket filters normally associated with carbon air tubes which only the DP product had inline filters. The overflow bottle is an abortion, the DP/cloned rearsets and heel guards are nice, the early carbon airbox looks right, the oil cooler looks right, shame it's only got the 45mm exhaust system, the 45/50mm half system would be more desirable. There should be a 5mm air gap between the belt guards and the cases which is a dead give away. Potentially a kosher early R but been quite a bit modified. Andy
There should be a 5mm air gap between the belt guards and the cases which is a dead give away. an you elaborate on that please?
I think he means there should be a 5mm gap between the belt guards and the engine cases for extra cooling...
If you look at any 916 family bike, the black plastic (carbon if DP/aftermarket) belt covers fit snuggly butting up against the engine case. Because the 748R has 22mm wide belts, they had to space the belt covers off by about 5mm so you can actually see a gap between the two. I have my R engine in the dining room so should be able to post a picture later. Andy
Didn't realise my eyesight had got so bad. That also means potentially no coolant, just water for an unspecified period of time during the bike's life. Andy
Pic of belt cover gap.... Also no plaques on year 2000 bikes. As said above, looks like a genuine R, but modified to a race/track bike.
