Is This A Slipper Clutch?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Zhed46, Sep 26, 2015.

  1. I just went to fit a new pressure plate on the 900ss ie (1998) and discovered that the one which was fitted to the bike doesn't have any teeth to mesh with the ones on the basket and also there's what looks like a spider spring inside the basket.

Although I once owned a 748R with a slipper, I can't recall ever taking the clutch cover off, so I don't have any experience of them.

The funny thing is that the clutch doesn't feel like a slipper clutch to me, as it doesn't give that free wheeling/false neutral feeling on a closed throttle.

Can I use the (toothed) pressure plate on my bike or do I need one without teeth?

Unfortunately the Haynes manual is no help whatsoever as it doesn't have an exploded parts diagram for the 900, but in the photos the pressure plate does have teeth

    Thanks

    Pics to follow

  2. The top pressureplate in your post would certainly appear to be a slipper clutch pressure plate. If you have a star shaped spring in the middle of your clutch centre then that is what you have. Andy

  3. Thanks for your reply. I've now posted a pic of the clutch itself.

I'm guessing I can't use the red toothed pressure plate with this clutch then?

Any ideas what clutch it is?

  4. Without stripping it out, could be stock 748R three ramp especially if you have a steel basket. Nowt wrong with it, was what the 748R and the 749R ran successfully. 748RS also ran them in competiton. Might be a good idea to strip it out and gve it a good clean and re grease. Remember first plate is a friction, last plate is a steel. Andy

  5. As a ps, if you are looking for a tarty red slipper pressure plate, I am sure I still have a brand new one somewhere. Andy

  6. Thanks for all that info Andy.

By first plate do you mean first plate in, as opposed to the first one behind the pressure plate, because the one behind the pressure plate on my bike is a steel.

Please can you PM me with a pic and price for your pressure plate?

    Thanks

  7. First plate into the clutch is a friction plate because the clutch centre has a pressure plate as part of it. The last plate of the pack immediately undrr the pressure plate will be a plain steel. It is likely that you will also have at least one 1.5 mm steel plate which may be dished. Andy

  8. It looks like a slipper and therefore you would need to check that it is built up properly and has the right clearance otherwise you may get grab or judder.

  9. Currently in Spain until Monday, so drop me a reminder. Rather a lot of beer is being consumed :). Andy

    Thanks for your help fellas.

In the end I just decided to bolt it all up and see if it works and it all seems ok in the yard. I did have bit of a hiccup because after I bolted it all up the lever was as hard as a rock, even with the pressure plate off again. I took the slave cylinder off on the other side to see what was going on at that end, and discovered that someone had put a 10mm nut between the piston and the rod as a bodge in order to space it out a bit (although query why the pushrod would be too short?) and this nut had become disloged when my 13 year old son who was helping me had pulled the clutch lever when the pressure plate was off, and this nut was now jamming everything.

Anyway, it all seems to run and release ok now so I'm off out for a test ride. If I don't post back on this thread within half an hour, please call the AA and/or an ambulance.

  11. Push rods come in two sizes. Pre 99(?) are shorter on the 748. Andy

  12. Thanks.

It's works ok but slips a little. Not sure if this is just because the clutch pack needs replacing and the slight change in fitment has highlighted that or whether it needs some shimming.

Replacing the clutch pack will be its own bloody problem though, seeing as I don't know what clutch it is.

  13. Your clutch is nearly as red as your bins...I hope you cleaned the rust off as it will likely cause judder.

  14. It's really only the order in which the plates go. I have all the info you need on my desk top at home. Probably back up and running by Tuesday so I'll pm some stuff. Andy

  15. Lol. Not my bins. I took that while I was waiting for the fish and chips I was using to pay my children for their labour and rheir company, although the younger one actually harmed rather than helped in the end. It's the thought that counts I suppose.

  16. Thanks mate. That's very kind. I may still want to buy your pressure plate anyway so let me know what price you're after please.
