I bought a number plate from a company called JDM. I selected the profiled option expecting it to be something else. I’ve been sent a weird shaped number plate. Is this really legal? Also my plate was sent without holes drilled in it. Has anyone else used them? Is this normal? I’m not really comfortable doing it myself!
The plates must - in order to be legal, be marked to show who supplied the number plate be marked with a British Standard number - this is ‘BS AU 145e’ for plates fitted after 1 September 2021 Spacing requirements are: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vehicle-registration-numbers-and-number-plates You could be fined up to £1,000 and your vehicle will allegedly fail its MOT test if you drive with incorrectly displayed number plates. BTW, on one of my cars the plates don't conform to any of the rules and I've never had a problem in 8 years. They are stuck in place with double sided foam pads - no drilling required. Though TBF they are the typical shape which yours appear not to be?
It’s for my motorbike. There’s nothing to stick it to. i know the spacing is legal and it has the manufacturers details printed on it. I’m concerned about the weird shape though.
I've had a few small as possible type plates from them, but not with that type of shape, I prefer the more standard look. Shape is legal as all measurements are correct, shape is personal taste. They can't come pre drilled as all tail tidies, plate holders are different. Holes are easy to drill, I just hold the plates up to holder and use a pen to mark the holes, then carefully drill, I use a small pilot from the back to front then go from the lettering side to the back with the correct size drill bit, 5 or 6mm I think. If fussy, match the the holding bolts to lettering, eg black on black.
Thanks very much. I wish I hadn’t gone for this shape (which I did by mistake). I’m worried it might draw attention from the police who might then take a closer look at my exhaust
So long as the distances between the characters, the distance between the 2 lines and the distance between the character and the edge of the plate, meets the requirement, the shape of the plate isn’t mandated. Andy
"The Exclusive Legal Supplier: JDM Plates in the UK JDM Plates is the sole legal supplier of profiled plates in the UK. Their unwavering commitment to safety and compliance with DVLA regulations solidifies their position as the top choice for riders seeking both legality and customization options." I'd be taking a copy of the link above provided by chrisw with me to the MOT station. Be really interesting to judge their reaction to something obviously different. Note the above copied from their website says: "commitment to safety and compliance with DVLA regulations." But also: "both legality and customization options" Note the use of "and" plus "options", which to someone like me who's read far to many cleverly written purchase agreements says they are either legal or customised, not both. Interested to hear what happens when the bike goes for it's MOT.
Just read the regs and there is nothing in them about plate shape. As long as all the other regs have been complied with the plate appears legal.
I do agree Chris, but some MOT inspectors appear to have an opinion of their own on this type of thing, and are very reluctant to admit they are wrong, even when presented with evidence. .
Yep, but that was the standard plate supplied from new with the car, not a modification. Again it all comes down to the MOT guys mood.
My concern is more about whether this shape plate will draw the eye of police who may ultimately say the plate is fine but then notice my termi pipes which sound like someone just blew up a Death Star. What do you think?
The Shape won't matter, as long as the letters are equally space and readable, don't need bs numbers either.
TBH if you are worried about the police noticing the plate and then checking your exhaust you’ve probably answered your own question PS you can of course wear a black visor, add some blue led downlighting and put orange bunny ears on your helmet just to improve your chances of being stopped!
My experience is that if the letters are the legal size and font, plod won't give a toss about the shape of the plate; any interest you generate will be caused by the Death Star Termis on their own.
