1260 It's Official - I'm A Picky Sod!

  1. Since getting my 1260S I've done a few odds and sods to make it a better fit for me and my riding style.

This weekend I finally sorted two issues that have been bothering me:
    • the seat
    • the levers
    The levers

I've never liked OEM levers. Not sure what it is but they just always feel unweidly to me (regardless of brand of bike I might add). With the 1260 I started by swapping to ASV shorties - honestly, these are probably the highest quality levers out there (from a sheer machining quality perspective).

Problem was - for my occasional commuting use the clutch lever was just that bit too short for my hand. It needed to be about 5mm longer and it would have been spot on. If I didn't fancy taking the bike to work and filtering......it wouldn't have been an issue.....but I do :p

So, ASV's off and Gilles FXC on. Not bad, little bit shorter than stock, longer than the ASV's. Really close but the profile wasn't exactly where I wanted it.....bit too straight.

Final set fitted today - TWM levers. Gave it a run out to the Super Sausage Cafe to give them a good try. Perfect . Ironically I really should have gone for these first as it's the exact set I have on my RC8R and I've always loved them on that bike.

    The seat

I've always had a pressure point with the stock seat in the high position. The seat was fine for about 40 - 60 mins but after that the pressure point became obvious and left me with a knumb bum basically

So off to Trimmania in Finchampstead I go. The team there gave it a re-shape and used a higher density foam for the point I experienced pressure. Not cheap but a really good job and the seat was significantly improved! Happy days I thought......until......I stumbled across an almost new Touratech Comfort Seat. It would have been rude to turn it down having seen the praise they get on here, so I jumped on it :grinning:

Tred that today too - wow! Honestly, the most comfortable I've been on the bike. I think it's partly to do with the extra grippy material in the centre as much as anything (I had Trimmania simply re-use the OEM cover). Either way, the Touratech is staying put as I'm off to Wales in a week or two so keen to see how I get on with it compared to the reshaped seat.....which is actually pretty close to the Touratech in terms of profile.

Next weekend seems me banging on a Puig Touring Screen (with Visor) for the Wales trip. It's Wales, it'll rain, we have to do some motorway and my current fave screen (Pikes Peak) provides naff all protection from fly strike / torrential rain.

I do hope the awful wind buffetting the stock screen gave me doesn't return :upyeah:

One observation I would make - for me the 1260 has been the hardest bike to get "just right". I've fiddled with a fair bit beyond the above. Admittedly some of that is down to me and my preferrence and maybe asking a bit much of an "adventure" bike.

It does feel like the 1260 has required more thought than other bikes I've owned though, which is odd given it's really very good as stock! Maybe I should have just left it well alone and just ridden it as it was intended......but wheres the fun in that? :joy:

  2. TWM/BDS levers - obvious choice every time!

  3. I use a Wunderlich deflector on the standard screen for long trips, looks rubbish but you can adjust to to find a sweet spot to cut turbulence. When I’m home I switch back to the short PP screen

  4. You’re bang on. Pretty much everyone has exactly the same issues they want to try and resolve. The forum is full of your issues.

I’ve got the Touratech but off the bike at the movement since I got it so not tried it but glad to hear your positive reaction. Appreciate its incredibly subjective but most people seem to find it an improvement over stock. Most OEM seats are showroom seats so they feel comfy for a few minutes but after that they’re too soft and unsupportive.

I’d like to swap levers. Just always paranoid about affecting sensors linked to brake and clutch but this is just my uninformed opinion. Had AGV before and they were lovely.

Re the screen try the iconic parts spacers. I tried a few different variations including short and long screens and now use the OE screen with the spcacers and personally it’s the best combo. Not perfect but massively improved and in some wind/pressure situations very quiet. Obviously again this is hugely subjective.

I’ve got the 2015 1200DVT so not sure if it’s the same issue never experienced false neutrals on any bike before anywhere near as frequently as this bike. Especially going 5th to 6th. Gilles brake and gear pedals are absolutely beautiful and have 99.9% eliminated the issue. Much more positive and a lovely aesthetic addition to the bike.

    Safe riding.

  5. The Gilles brake and shift pedals are on my list. Good to hear they tighten up the shift accuracy a bit. I don’t find the stock pedals terrible, they’re just a bit vague and imprecise.

I do have the Iconic spacers too. They didn’t sort the stock screen for me, hence the continued efforts :). They definitely did help though so they’re staying put :upyeah:

Swapping the levers is literally a 10 minute job if you twiddle spanner’s regularly / have worked on bikes generally. It’s not hard at all and there’s no sensor impact. There are microswitches for both levers but as long as you use compatible levers (that will correctly actuate those microswitches when the levers are pulled) you’re all good

  6. Thanks for the info. I’ll get the levers swapped
Have you done the sprocket change and sorted the front preload?

  7. Yep, both done :upyeah:

Preload was way out - as per normal

Rear sprocket is now a 42 tooth supersprox (525): details here . Which made a really nice difference and I much prefer compared to stock gearing

  8. Chain and sprocket look superb
