There must be a few on here who have ridden both. I am interested in the Rs engine performance compared to the S is it night and day or next to nothing. I remember years ago I bought a TLR that was touted as having more HP over the TLS...it didnt really and the mid range was poo in comparison..
I had both at the same time . I owned an S from 2003 then in 2007 I purchased a new 1098. Had that for 3 months and chopped it in for an 06 999R . I kept them both for about a year I would take the S out purely to keep the milage off the R then I tracked the R and never used the S again , I would say that the R is a lot harsher but once you have mastered it its a better bike by far . It has a genuine 150 bhp at the rear wheel and is as good as it gets. This ones a keeper had it 6 years now and never thought of getting rid .
ive sent an email off to a german tuner who supplies parts for the whole lot and im looking at the 1038cc high comp kit for my S which puts it at 155 rear for approx £1200.00 gold coins. a straight swap out. the power coming not so much from the extra 38cc....its from the hike in compression with monster torque.. 150 sounds high for a stock R they seem to be more around the genuine 142 range. I was interested in the power delivery characteristics of the two
Yeah probably is on a stock R . But give it a pipe and filters, valve timing and some dyno tuning gets it easily to 150 RWHP . Standard S is 11.4/1 compression . R is 12.5/1 compression with bigger valves and better fuel injection . Its a completely different engine can be tuned to 180 bhp with quite a few £s spent on it.
I bought a strong S engine from Phil at storm exhausts that made a tad over 147 rwbhp I'd have to dig the dyno sheet out to show the curve. He upgraded to an R engine and if I recall it was only 5-6 bhp more but in his words its just does it all a bit better.
well I have been onto pistal in italy. they can supply 102mm drop in pistons for 600+vat and today called extreme engineering engine fettlers who are a specialist reborer and will rebore and replate for approx 320 all in so that approx 1k (inc gaskets) for a 1038cc with comprssion of 13.8 / 1. with no headwork and just remapping it makes approx 155 at the rear wheel with monstrous torque.. most of the power gain comes from the hike in compression and not the cc increase... im mulling it over... extreme did say that some ducati engines use a poor quality alloy that can be or become porous and they would specifically test for that before commencement of work and if it didnt pass their test they wouldnt take it any further as it leads to issues with replating...
Plenty of potential in the S engine. . Speak to Richard at Louigi Moto he was telling me that 749R heads can be made to fit the 999 with big gains. There is a guy over ducati.ms who raves about the 1038 kit, cant remember his username but if you stick 1038 in the search box you will find him. I really want to stick a 1098 engine in mine.
