K & N alternative air filters....

  1. ........this surely isn't a credible alternative to K&N, is it?

Ignore where they come from, they seem to be available in the UK for a similar price.

If it is, I'm taking a hacksaw to my bl**dy airbox..........

I was going to 'trim' it down to just a battery box and coil holder but when I saw how much K & N prices have risen I was horrified and decided I would have to continue with the pain of getting it in and out, just to be able to say hello to the carbs.

To think I put a pair of K&Ns on my Guzzi LeMans for £8 and a similar K&N pair would now be nearly £100 delivered.

  2. I am sorry do you mean is this particular brand ok or are cone filters ok? If second it will work on both carb and IE bikes but when ever I was reading about them it was more recommended for IE bikes or bikes with long inlets like IE.

  3. I know the bike will work with them......(in fact the longer the inlet manifold, the better the lower end grunt.....ram pipes and trumpets have a similar effect but nowhere near as much) but these things seem to be 'unbranded' and appear to be different internal construction (full of wire)......

  4. Good I was worried for a second that you lost memory? Can't help you but will watch, always liked the look of them but I want my low end torque.

  5. I might just buy one to pull apart to see how it is constructed........be great if it doesn't have to be oiled.....that's the negative side to K&Ns....makes a bl**dy mess everywhere.

  6. I do not oil my one as much as they say I should … I honestly should start.

  7. May be worth a read on inlet track length BikeBoy.org - Ducati 900 : FUEL INJECTION VERSUS CARBIES

I use a BMC filter FM104/01 this is the same part number as Audi and Porch use (cheeper to buy from a car supplier). On inspection it looks a better constructed filter than K&N

  8. Porsche 924 filter fits the std SS/Monster airbox, but its too tall to refit the airbox lid......

  9. I'm talking about these (not the flat ones) so I can junk the airbox.....

  10. I used something similar to these on my Pantah (not K&N) they worked but not a lot of filter area, if I remember correctly I had to richen the mixture.

  11. One of the many endearing qualities of the 750ss is the induction howl from the airbox above 7k r.p.m. I absolutely loved the sound and wouldn't want to get rid of it by using non-standard air filters. I would have thought that Ducati engineers have spent a lot of time designing the box to maximize engine efficiency, and that fitting non standard filters might compromise that.

  12. If you fit cone filters to the IE throttle bodys you will need to fit velocity stacks first.
    Air flow will be poor.

  13. It's a pity Ducati engineers didn't spend more time improving the very poor design 2V heads.

  14. So why do so many people hack the airbox about and appears to be not only enthusiast's mods but also a factory mod which was once available?

  15. Because it adds a bunch of torque and hp to the midrange on the small airbox Ducs . And some top end increases too usually. Needs fuelling to suite though my old paulsmart sport classic made both without fueling changes it was too lean to leave it like that, pc v fixed that though didn't get more than about .5hp more.

  16. Well.....thanks for all the comments, but they don't really afford an opinion on whether the example filter is a credible alternative to the same style of K & N filter.

  17. Personally when all you have to do is cut/remove the airbox lid to get good gains on a carby 900 with jettting fixes I dont see the benifit of individual cones which may actually reduce the filter surface area available to an individual carb ie airbox filter is probably larger surface area than the individual cone and available to each carb. Fitting cones may result in significant jetting/fuelling challenges too to avoid flat spots or holes in the power curve? FI bikes have the benifit of PCIII/V to fiddle fuelling whereas BSTs may need more than just jets swapped ... K.I.S.
Ps all this assumes you want a usable road bike, if you want the mostest fastest 900ss motor then fit hi comps spit FCRs and MBP heads.

  18. Firstly, I'm not looking for 'gains'.......it's already enough for a 750, to which fitting FCRs and high comp pistons is a complete waste of dosh......If I wanted gains, I would buy a Jap multi.

It has already got a dynojet stage 2 kit fitted already, because of the zorsts and the airbox top has no trumpets.....

If the carbs didn't face forward, I would simply junk the airbox and fit ram pipes with small gauze screens.....

.....however as they face forward and the d*mn airbox is getting on my nerves having to put it in, take it out, put it in, take it out; trying to track down the poor running issue at low revs, I'm seriously considering junking the best part of the airbox, so I can get at the carbs without scrabbling around on the floor to adjust them or adjust the float heights quickly (and without having to stick a long screwdriver through the middle of the oil cooler to get at the tickover and synch screws)...

I don't particularly like K&Ns but I am looking at all options for individual filters...

The ones below are available either with a cotton or stainless mesh medium...

Overall diameter approx 150mm Overall height approx 155mm

Therefore just the basic surface area of the outside of the filter (excluding cap and base) is approx 612 cm2 without the reverse cone in the top....that's for each filter.

The standard flat filter is approx 625 cm2 for both carbs.......so unless my maths are wrong, the cones have a far greater area in total.......
