Hi, i recently had my house broken into and both keys for my 2014 Multistrada were stolen including the red one. Has anyone any experience of replacing keys without going to the dealer who wants a fortune. Thanks
Not personally but a mate got the lock from one of his panniers and a blank from eBay (I have one as well) and took it to I think Timpsons or some decent key cutting service and they managed to get an image of the inside and cut the key. Worked first time.
The dealer keys may cost a fortune but your home insurance should cover the cost if the loss was from a burglary
And if the burglar has the keys he may come back for the bike! I don't know how easy or expensive it is to change the whole lock set on an MTS but if insurance is going to cover it it's definitely something you should consider.
I’m pretty certain your dealer should be able to de-activate your stolen key, when they connect your bike to there DDS Therefore the thief can’t come back with the stolen key and have your bike away Unfortunately it’s a dealer visit with the bike I’m afraid
Just a thought, do you have house insurance and would this cover it under the replacement of locks as keys were stolen, if not house then ask your bike insurance if it would be covered.
in the case of both keys going, then the HF (handfree) system needs replacing. That's a new lock set and handfree unit. 4.8 Loss or damage of the active and passive key In case of loss of the active key (black key) and of the passive key (red key) it is necessary to replace the Hands Free kit system that consists in: 1) Hands-Free control unit; 2) Active key (black key) with electronic board and key coded insert installed; 3) passive key (red key) with transponder; 4) seat lock; 5) complete tank filler plug; 6) nipples for panniers (only for Multistrada 1200 MY10-16). If you had one key, then it's a simple case of replacing the missing key and programming it, but you do need one original key to do this. Won't be cheap I'm afraid, but you don't need to go to the dealer as such. If you're able, you can swap all the parts yourself and save the labour. The kit is preprogrammed.
Thanks for that definitive answer @nelly Despite turning the house upside down, I cannot find my 999’s red and black keys I have put in a “safe place” but I do have one black key and the code card. Can I get replacement keys please?
Going down the official route, no. Loss of the red key is game over. Needs the whole shooting match replacing.. lock set, clocks and possibly (not always) ECU. @chrisw is your man, i think, in this scenario ;)

Thanks Nelly, good to get the official position. I am already in touch with Chris but my handbook says ‘contact your dealer’. Hoping to go down the ‘immo-off’ route to make antenna and transponders irrelevant.
Thanks Nooby, but house insurance does not cover anything "automotive" and bike insurance (AA at least) does not automatically cover keys unless you pay an additional premium, i of course didn't.
